New article

Nice work on the new Tom's Restaurant and Bar article. Hey, they have an off-track horse and greyhound gambling room there between the restaurant and bar, or at least used to. Maybe this should be included in the article? North America1000 21:42, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

@Northamerica1000 Thanks! I've been obsessed with covering PDX's food and nightlife scenes lately. I dont recall reading about this in the sources already used as inline citations, but perhaps I've overlooked? If you happen to find mention in any sources, please do update the entry! ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:47, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
Here's something from Wweek from 2017 (link): "With Rialto closed, the only place in Portland to place off-track bets—aside from horse track Portland Meadows—was Tom's Restaurant and Bar on Division Street." North America1000 21:55, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
@Northamerica1000 Ok, thanks! I've posted on the article's talk page as a reminder for future expansion. Working on other things at the moment but will try to revisit. ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:57, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
@Northamerica1000 BTW, holler if you'd be interested in co-nominating this article for Good status in the future. I think with a bit more info about the bar and gambling (I see a couple other sources to incorporate after adding "gambling" to my Google search), this is fairly close to meeting GA criteria. If not, no worries, just curious. ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:01, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
I added a bit (diff). I'll keep in mind what you said above, but I'm not very involved in the FA/GA process nowadays. I no longer live in PDX, but it remains one of my homes away from home. North America1000 22:04, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
Thanks! I understand. Perhaps I'll take the plunge solo, but feel free to follow along if you're interested by adding to watchlist. Either way, happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:06, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
Maybe I'll try to email you with some fun sordid PDX details. I don't like to talk much about personal stuff on wiki. PDX remains a party town, I'll say that much... North America1000 22:08, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
Hah, sounds good! ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:10, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
Gimme a few days... North America1000 22:16, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

Portland Fish Market is another decent one. Thanks for creating it! The lead could use expansion, but hey, these things take time. Portland 2.0 is well underway now, and the rent and leasing prices continue to rise... erm. North America1000 23:10, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

Portland's reputation has taken a bit of a beating the last couple years, yet the cost of living keeps going up. During the pandemic, I created many articles about restaurants which closed, but fortunately I've been able to write entries about a lot of new ventures, too. Definitely a city in transition. I have some concerns about PDX's future but at the same time there's much here to enjoy. ---Another Believer (Talk) 23:19, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

The very best Reuben in town can be had at Edelweiss Sausage Co & Delicatessen in SE, Brooklyn neighborhood. It may not qualify for an article, but it's the best in PDX! A close runner up would be Goose Hollow Inn's Reuben. North America1000 23:17, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

You mean Edelweiss Sausage & Delicatessen? :) I've been busy! ---Another Believer (Talk) 23:19, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
Nice! Hey, they make all of their sausages and cured meats in-house there too. For carnivores and omnivores, it's a great place. Probably not so good for vegans and vegetarians, though.   North America1000 08:27, 16 February 2022 (UTC)

Mama Đút

Extended content

I enjoy reading your Portland articles when I drop in at the Wikipedia 50,000 challenge page. My son just moved from NW Portland to SE Portland and he says the Vietnamese restaurants are great!. Do you eat at all the restaurants that you create articles for? This one looks good! MauraWen (talk) 21:43, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

@MauraWen: Wow, thanks! I've received a little bit of criticism for creating so many articles about Portland restaurants, but I've really enjoyed doing so and learning a lot about the local restaurant scene (past and present). I'm so thankful there's such strong coverage of the restaurant industry so I can create so many interesting articles about local history and culture. I've not been to all of the restaurants, but I have a (very long) running list of restaurants to try. I've also made photographing interiors and exteriors of restaurants a habit, so I can improve Wikipedia entries.
I keep a running log of places I've been and things I've seen here, just for fun! I hope your son is enjoying SE PDX, which is also where I live. An Xuyên Bakery and Portland Cà Phê are great, and I've heard wonderful things about Ha VL and Rose VL Deli, which are both on my list to try soon!
Thanks again for the note. I've enjoyed seeing your contributions to WPUS50, too! ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:50, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
BTW, I began documenting Portland's restaurant scene during the pandemic because I felt it was one way I could help a struggling industry. For what felt like an eternity, all I was reading about was restaurant closures. Now, finally, I'm reading about tons of new projects and business launches. Hoping PDX is on the upswing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:55, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
@Another Believer: That is an impressive body of work! I really the variety of your work, and all great contributions. Don't listen to the critics! I should be writing more American themed articles (I find myself comparing American and UK wiki challenge numbers--we seem to be even right now), instead of all the UK articles I create. Maybe when I start traveling again, I can get inspired.
I like writing about a variety of subjects, currently it is archaeology, gardening and art. I am creating and expanding a lot of articles on the British medieval and Scottish prehistoric time periods. I also love gardening and realized a few years ago that Wikipedia had very few rose articles. It's my mission to find many new rose photos for Wikicommons, learn about the important roses and rose breeders and create articles for the general public. If you decide to photograph and upload roses to Wikicommons from your wonderful Portland rose garden this spring and summer, please let me know and I can add the roses to my do list (if I can find enough resources/references).
I am hoping to come out to Portland this summer to visit my son and his partner and see their new house and tour Portland's lovely rose gardens. Hoping to get as many photos as I can for Wikicommons. I'll pass along those restaurant names to my son. He and his partner also have been very supportive of the restaurant workers, they have been donating money and asking us to support those groups in lieu of xmas and birthday gifts. Take care MauraWen (talk) 01:02, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
@MauraWen Especially if you remind me when the weather's better, I'd be down to visit the International Rose Test Garden and take a ton of photographs. Gosh, I suppose there's a chance I might know your son. Feel free to email me if you prefer to continue this discussion more privately. Either way, happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 01:06, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

I just reverted two edits but I'll refrain for now from reverting any more. Otherwise, it'll just waste a lot of both of our time if we can't agree on something first, and reach a conclusion. Certain postal abbreviations are listed under Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Abbreviations#Abbreviations_widely_used_in_Wikipedia. These abbreviations are used by the US Postal Service. These abbreviations are used on street signs. They are used on Google maps, and in many of the sources we cite. I agree that they should not be used in the main text, but I would argue that they are appropriate to the infoboxes, given that they are used by the sources, and commonly used in Portland and also the rest of the United States when referring to street names. Confusing ones like Ste are to be avoided, but ones like Ave, St, S, N, E, W, SE, SW, NE, and NW should be kept. Talib1101 (talk) 05:55, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

P.S. Mama Đút and Le Pigeon are the articles I reverted before I realized that reverting at least a half dozen edits without explanation is a bad idea. Talib1101 (talk) 05:57, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

P.P.S. Commander's Palace is an example of an article that uses "Ave" apparently unchallenged. Think it's more readable to most readers. Talib1101 (talk) 05:59, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

P.P.P.S. I'll admit the style you use is more common but I still don't like it. Why is it apparently preferred? Talib1101 (talk) 06:02, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

I thought we were generally supposed to avoid abbreviations on Wikipedia because not all readers are familiar with the same abbreviations. However, I see some seem to be okay to use here. I think I was asked to remove abbreviations during a string of Good article nominations, so I just got used to avoiding abbreviations in the first place. ---Another Believer (Talk) 06:21, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

P.P.P.P.S. I rolled back my undos. Talib1101 (talk) 06:04, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

P.P.P.P.P.S. I think we "should follow the most common rendering found in reliable sources for that particular locale" (MOS:POSTABBR). Talib1101 (talk) 06:08, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

WikiCup 2022 March newsletter

Extended content

And so ends the first round of the WikiCup. Last year anyone who scored more than zero points moved on to Round 2, but this was not the case this year, and a score of 13 or more was required to proceed. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

  •   Epicgenius, a finalist last year, who led the field with 1906 points, gained from 32 GAs and 19 DYKs, all on the topic of New York buildings.
  •   AryKun, new to the contest, was second with 1588 points, having achieved 2 FAs, 11 GAs and various other submissions, mostly on the subject of birds.
  •   Bloom6132, a WikiCup veteran, was in third place with 682 points, garnered from 51 In the news items and several DYKs.
  •   GhostRiver was close behind with 679 points, gained from achieving 12 GAs, mostly on ice hockey players, and 35 GARs.
  •   Kavyansh.Singh was in fifth place with 551 points, with an FA, a FL, and many reviews.
  •   SounderBruce was next with 454 points, gained from an FA and various other submissions, mostly on United States highways.
  •   Ktin, another WikiCup veteran, was in seventh place with 412 points, mostly gained from In the news items.

These contestants, like all the others who qualified for Round 2, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. Between them, contestants completed reviews of a large number of good articles as the contest ran concurrently with a GAN backlog drive. Well done all! To qualify for Round 3, contestants will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two participants.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Anything that should have been claimed for in Round 1 is no longer eligible for points. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. @Naraht Yup, thanks! You beat me to the punch adding the correct Joey Jay. ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:11, 4 March 2022 (UTC)
NP. Note, we may disagree on how various queens should be alphabetized, but I'm not sure we've disagreed long term on things that are more substantitative. Note, also the template was removed from the page of the Chilean show (The Switch Drag Race), I restored it and that will probably end up on the talk page there and I'm not 100% sure that it does belong. Speedy deletion declined: Utica Queen

Hello Another Believer. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Utica Queen, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: The article makes a credible assertion of importance or significance, sufficient to pass A7. Thank you. Shirt58 (talk) 09:13, 9 March 2022 (UTC)

Your "restoring"

Extended content

Let's talk about you reverting my edits with no explantion whatsoever, despite the content that i put was well-sourced, also putting back biased unsourced statements. I'm pretty curious about that--MGK king (talk) 14:05, 9 March 2022 (UTC)

You added claims about Flavorwire (with unformatted citations) as the opening sentence of the Reception section across multiple Good articles. I don't have a problem with editors adding content, but if you're going to edit Good articles, then at least fold new claims into existing content appropriately and format citations correctly. ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:09, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
So you removed the whole content because my citations were unformatted? That's enough of an excuse to remove a content?--MGK king (talk) 14:14, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
Yup, and because you're seemingly focused on making your content the opening sentence of the Reception section in each case. Please do not revert again. If you would like to propose specific article changes, then use article talk pages. Thanks! ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:15, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
Why should I be the one that uses talk page and not you?--MGK king (talk) 14:16, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
Because you're the one proposing article changes which have been reverted by another editor. This is how Wikipedia works. ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:17, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
You're seemingly focused on removing the negative parts of the Reception section on songs. That's pretty worse than unformatted sources.--MGK king (talk) 14:16, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
Nope, I have no problem with "negative" content existing. I want Wikipedia entries to be fair, neutral, balanced, and representative of sourcing. I'm not even a big Beyonce fan so don't assume I have an agenda here. ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:19, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
So why you did this in that page, and you are avoiding to do so on one single source?--MGK king (talk) 14:16, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
I'm not sure what you mean. I'm not going to go back and forth about this. If you would like to propose specific changes because you disagree with my revert(s), then use article talk pages to get other editors to weigh in. Thanks ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:23, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
And what is the problem on that review starting the section? You should justify fully your reverts too, remember that--MGK king (talk) 14:24, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
Please don't comment here further, thanks. ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:25, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
I'm going to get the citations formatted and restore it, is it cool if i do so?--MGK king (talk) 14:27, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
@MGK king: I'm not opposed to you folding claims into existing text appropriately, but your preferred text does not need to be the opening line of the section and citations should be formatted correctly. ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:29, 9 March 2022 (UTC)

Since you asked, this edit shows me using a tool to archive properly formatted citations and has nothing to do with formatting citations on behalf of another editor. ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:34, 9 March 2022 (UTC)

Oh, you've been blocked. Byeeeeeeee! ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:34, 9 March 2022 (UTC)

Zebulon Baird Vance Monument ‎

Extended content

There was an update today and I discovered the article is way longer than it was only a few months ago. I'm concerned there is too much detail, particularly about Gov. Vance, but I don't know how much to remove. We know he had slaves and considered African Americans inferior. How much detail is really needed? On the other hand, there was a lot about the building of the monument that is actually about the monument. There is also trivia, which i enjoy and like to add to articles, but it's discouraged.

Others have edited since then and don't seem to have objected.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 21:15, 5 April 2022 (UTC)

I appreciate the heads up and invite to make further improvements to the entry, but I think you should engage with User:Rublamb and perhaps have this discussion on the article's talk page. Perhaps you two can work together and find a compromise, or starting a discussion might invite other page watchers to weigh in. I would recommend identifying specific pieces of text you think should be removed. --Another Believer (Talk) 21:26, 5 April 2022 (UTC)
I don't know how much is too much, but I do believe a lot of the details about the governor himself are really better suited for his own article. But I don't know what the consensus would be and that's why I asked you and maybe others.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 14:48, 6 April 2022 (UTC)
@Vchimpanzee I agree, the entry should be focused on the monument and details about him belong on the article about him. I would strongly recommend proposing some trims to the article on the Talk page. ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:15, 6 April 2022 (UTC)
Can you start?— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 15:45, 6 April 2022 (UTC)
I don't feel like taking the lead on this right now. I see you've started a discussion with the editor who expanded the page, so let's see if they reply. Usually discussions about article changes take place on article Talk pages, so starting a discussion there might prompt others to take notice. ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:48, 6 April 2022 (UTC)

DYK for Antimonumenta (Guadalajara)

On 6 April 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Antimonumenta (Guadalajara), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that antimonumentas in Mexico, like those in Guadalajara (pictured), in Morelia, or in Mexico City, are installed by protesters to demand justice for women who suffer from violence in the country? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Anti-monuments in Mexico. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Antimonumenta (Guadalajara)), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

WikiCup 2022 May newsletter

Extended content

The second round of the 2022 WikiCup has now finished. It was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 115 points to advance to round 3. There were some very impressive efforts in round 2, with the top seven contestants all scoring more than 500 points. A large number of the points came from the 11 featured articles and the 79 good articles achieved in total by contestants.

Our top scorers in round 2 were:

  1.   Epicgenius, with 1264 points from 2 featured article, 4 good articles and 18 DYKs. Epicgenius was a finalist last year but has now withdrawn from the contest as he pursues a new career path.
  2.   AryKun, with 1172 points from two featured articles, one good article and a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews.
  3.   Bloom6132, with 605 points from 44 in the news items and 4 DYKs.
  4.   Sammi Brie, with 573 points from 8 GAs and 21 DYKs.
  5.   Ealdgyth, with 567 points from 11 GAs and 34 good and featured article reviews.
  6.   Panini!, with 549 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and several other sources.
  7.   Lee Vilenski, with 545 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and a number of reviews.

The rules for featured and good article reviews require the review to be of sufficient length; brief quick fails and very short reviews will generally not be awarded points. Remember also that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Bolivia Carmichaels

Extended content

Hello Another Believer. I'm doing a copy edit for the GOCE on Bolivia Carmichaels. Interesting article, but the person is more interesting. I wish there were a little more on her under personal life. I found a couple of articles that were complimentary. https://www.oregonlive.com/clackamascounty/2018/06/drag_show_comes_to_a_retiremen.html

https://www.octc.org/gala

You might want to add these performances; they're both unique. Also found a LinkedIn page that provides personal information from Daniel Elliott https://www.linkedin.com/in/bolivia-carmichaels-daniel-elliott-91526368/

I feel that, because of the severity of BLP citation policy, this would not be considered reliable, but it does give background on her and what she does when she's not entertaining. And it is not contentious.

I'm almost done editing. If you add any more content, I'll check it out. Cleveland Todd (talk) 16:24, 7 May 2022 (UTC)

I don't really base my self esteem on what happens to the Wikipedia entries I create. I'm just trying to do what I can to improve the project and sometimes I miss the mark. All good, looking forward to the community discussion! Happy editing, ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:05, 10 May 2022 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Poison Waters

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Poison Waters you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria.   This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of SusunW -- SusunW (talk) 14:01, 18 May 2022 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Poison Waters

The article Poison Waters you nominated as a good article has passed  ; see Talk:Poison Waters for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On This Day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of SusunW -- SusunW (talk) 13:21, 19 May 2022 (UTC)

Thanks again! ---Another Believer (Talk) 13:45, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
@SusunW Kind of a strange ask here, but on the off chance you're interested, I'm currently seeking editors to review COI requests for a draft Wikipedia article about... me! You see, someone created a low quality stub in the main space, which was then moved into draft space for improvement. I've since shared a draft entry for other editors to review and implement appropriately. If you have any interest, I invite you to take a look at Draft talk:Jason Moore for more information. Either way, happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 01:58, 25 May 2022 (UTC)
Another Believer, I'm not saying no, but neither am I able to right now. Lots of stuff on my plate both on wiki and in real life right now. SusunW (talk) 14:26, 25 May 2022 (UTC)
@SusunW No worries! I've sought help at the admin noticeboard since someone has created a second stub about me in the main space with incorrect and unsourced information. Thanks and happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:28, 25 May 2022 (UTC)

Statues and memorials

Please, if you're creating an article about a statue or memorial, give us a clue as to why the person/theme has been commemorated in a statue or memorial. I've added a sentence to Freedom Suits Memorial (I literally thought of "suits" as clothes and was baffled as to what kind of outfits needed a memorial, till I looked up Freedom suit - which wasn't even linked - and found out), but Statue of Sally Ride and Statue of Sandy Koufax could do with some explanation of who these people were. Thanks. PamD 17:57, 21 June 2022 (UTC)

Article advice

I’ve been writing about long-gone politicians for a while now and I’ve decided to try sometime different … an article on an interesting pub in Redmond called General Duffy’s Waterhole. Since you’ve done a lot of similar articles, I thought I’d seek some expert advice before I posted my article. I’ve included both positive and negative info about the pub from a wide variety of sources to keep the article balanced … noting COVID-era OLCC citations along with community awards/etc. FYI, my goal as always is to do a   quality article. Also, I think the back story about General Duffy (the elk) would make a good DYK bullet. If you have time to take a quick look, you can find a draft of the article at the bottom of my user page in the Sandbox section. Any thoughts/comments would be appreciated. Thanks!--Orygun (talk) 05:49, 23 June 2022 (UTC)

GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to receive a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.

We hope to see you there!
