Julie Gibbings
I am a Senior Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh.
My specializations are Modern Latin America; gender, race, and class; space and time; and indigenous history. I completed my doctoral studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2012 and was a visiting professor at Yale University’s Agrarian studies program in 2014-15.
My research and teaching interests include Latin America in the 19th and 20th Centuries, especially Guatemala and Central America. My first book, Our Time is Now: Race and Modernity in Postcolonial Guatemala (Cambridge University Press 2020) addresses questions of modernity and race during the rise of capitalism in nineteenth and early twentieth century Guatemala. I also co-edited with Heather Vrana, Out from the Shadow: Revisiting the Revolution from Post-Peace Guatemala (University of Texas Press, 2020), which is a critical new analysis of Guatemala's famed 1944-54 Revolution. I am currently working on a new project on indigenous and state cartographies in Cold War Guatemala. I am also interested in historical theory and oral history methodologies.
