Zinc tablets

My husband is just getting over a terrible cold: a sneezing, coughing-all-night, mucus-spitting, mess of a five-day cold.  Like all men, he has to be told to take Tylenol, cough syrup, and various other remedies for colds that will help a person feel better while the cold is making him miserable. but he was on the mend yesterday.

It was a nice day, considering this is December.  I went on my walk in the pasture, feeling a little more tired than usual.  When I got back to the house I was tired and a bit achy, but I had noticed a cup of frozen, smashed* banana in the freezer and decided to make banana bread with it.  I rested for 55 minutes while it was in the oven, then told Cliff I was going out to spend half-an-hour letting the goats graze on their leashes; part of the time I just laid right down on the grass holding the leashes and looking up at the sky... it was so relaxing!  Gabe came running over when he noticed me on the ground to see if I was alive or dead.

Before I left my husband asked when we could have some banana bread, and I told him quick breads are best eaten the next day after baking.  However, I figured it's been such a long time since I've baked anything for just us, I decided we'd have a slice after I got back to the house.  It was better than I remembered!

But the dishes hadn't been washed yet, so I got that done and sat down, and realized my throat was a little itchy.  I am a firm believer in Zinc lozenges, but it took awhile to find them.  They may not prevent a cold, but it seems they make the cold easier, so I try to take one at least every two hours if I feel a cold coming on.  This morning I still have a slightly itchy throat, but that's about all.  We'll see how this turns out.

HERE is what doctors say about it.

*I didn't know "smashed" wasn't a real word, but I decided to go ahead and use it anyhow!  I'm an outlaw like that.

Sounds like a good day. I'm glad Cliff is on the mend. I also am on the mend from a cold of some sort. Ugh. Why isn't "smashed" a real word? It's very descriptive. Words that are descriptive ought to be real. Haha

  2. I think smashed is a real word. Certainly better than other ones on social media. Might want to check / test for covid. Hope you got your annual covid, flu and RSV shots. It helps not get too sick. Yea, I like zinc drops too, but I only use 1-2 a day. Funny how it makes that metallic taste in your mouth. The warm banana bread sounds good. Goat walks sound peaceful. 1. I get every shot I can get! I'm not a bit sick, my throat is itchy but not sore. I only take zinc at the first hint of a cold in the first 24 hours. I haven't had many colds, but there was no escaping it when Mr. Sneeze was coughing and spitting. I went about four years with no colds at all. That's why it took me awhile to find the zink tabs.

  3. I am a firm believer that bread of any kind if best eaten warm, soon after being removed from the oven. When I make a loaf of banana bread, 75% of it will be gone in the first half hour and then the remaining 25% will linger a few more days before it gets eaten.

For what it’s worth, at the very first sign of a scratchy throat, I take a Tbs. of local honey and very slowly swallow! Also, gargle 1/2 tsp. Salt in 8 oz. Warm water several times/day. It works good if I catch it right away. Pat/ Central Texas

    1. I've had doctors and nurses recommend that for a sore throat. It does work. You don't get well necessarily, but it helps the pain.

  5. Smashed is a real word! (in my opinion anyway) I use Zicam and extra Vitamin C when I feel a cold coming on. It usually works to shorten the cold and its severity. However, I got hit by something in October that's been a bear to get rid of.

Wow, he was smashed. No, he wasn’t as that is not a word.

  7. Smashed is not a word? My gosh! I am a rebel too! Well, if you are in the group, I am glad to be there. Zinc seems to be effective, but so much depends on timing. Since I am one of those strange people who doesn't seem to recognize she has a cold until she goes to bed, sleeps long and hard, wakes up dazed and confused with a full on cold, shuffles around blowing my nose and hacking for a couple hours and saying 'so that is why I was so miserable yesterday...' Somewhere in the middle of this snot-o-rama, the idea of zinc occurs to me. If I was only smart enough to take it before bedtime, I would be better able to judge its effect.
