Irrigation plays a very important role in our agriculture as well as on economy. During dry season, irrigation of the whole country faces an acute crisis due to load shedding of 1400 MW [1]. As Bangladesh has good solar resources, with high availability during the peak irrigation season, therefore, solar pumping of water for irrigation is an innovative and environment-friendly solution for its largely agro-based economy. Infrastructure Development Company Ltd (IDCOL) is providing financial support to solar irrigation. Already 450 irrigation pumps have been installed by IDCOL in different divisions of Bangladesh. In this paper, 450 project’s data has been analyzed and the findings are shown by different graphs. Different division’s radiation, water-head and required water are mainly focused in the analysis which will be very useful for upcoming irrigation projects. The use of solar panel is increasing rapidly all over the world. Fortunately, the location of Bangladesh is quite suitable for harnessing solar energy. However, large area is still uncovered either by grid electricity or by electricity generated from renewable sources. In the off grid areas of Bangladesh, solar home system (SHS) is getting popular day by day due to its declining price and due to favourable financial packages offered through Infrastructure Development Company Ltd. (ID-COL). Around 50,000 SHS are being installed every month under IDCOL program only. [1]. Already IDCOL has achieved a target of installing two million SHS by March 2013. With the gradual increase of per capita income and GDP growth, people are more inclined to lead a better life by having electricity in their homes at a higher price than that of grid electricity. However, there are some challenges that need to be mitigated to make the SHS viable and cost effective in future. In this paper, a study has been made to assess the challenges faced by the SHS users in a remote village in the district of Madaripur, Bangladesh. The objective of the study was to observe the present condition of the SHS and the degree of satisfaction enjoyed by the customers of SHS. It has been found that the satisfaction level of the people is not that encouraging due to low back up time (highest for three hours) in the evening and also high cost involved in the replacement of batteries. The paper focuses the problems faced by the SHS users and suggests some alternative solutions to provide electricity to the users for a longer period of time throughout day & night. The socio economic benefit that can be derived by providing electricity for a longer period of time is immense. The major constraint of SHS has been highlighted first and then min grid/ micro-grid type generation system has been proposed to provide uninterruptible electricity at a lesser cost.

People of that area remain without electricity for approximately 6-8 hours in a day. A small survey was also conducted on 50 houses of Teghoria, Poradaho, Mirpur, Kushtia, Bangladesh and data were collected about their electricity demand during the time of load shedding every day. The mini-grid would be powered by the extra energy coming from the irrigation panel. This was done simply by changing the run time of the motor in an efficient way. The run time of the motor varies in different seasons. HOMER software was used to calculate the cost analysis of the proposed model for irrigation along with ac mini-grid. The proposed model provides two welfares. The first one is that the rural farmers can get water for irrigation with a lower installment which is shown in the paper. The second one is that the demand of electricity of rural people during load shedding can also be fulfilled from the ac mini-grid. Therefore, the overall cost can be minimized and the new irrigation system becomes more feasible for rural farmers as well as for the owners.

A large area is still uncovered either by grid electricity or by the electricity generated from renewable sources. Still solar home system is very popular in Bangladesh with some unavoidable constraints. From this perspective, a hybrid AC mini grid system based on solar PV has been designed for an off-grid region of Bangladesh. A survey was held on the rural people of that off-grid area to gather different types of information to design a feasible hybrid AC mini grid system. Cost analysis has been done to setup the mini grid depending on the information using HOMER software. Furthermore, as it is a hybrid system, others necessary parts have also been prepared to design a complete AC mini grid system. Some indispensable parts of AC mini grid are centralized solar plant, Charge controller, transmission line, energy meter for every consumer and a common Load Dispatch Center (LDC) to control the total system that has been introduced in this paper. Finally, a special grid-tie inverter is designed to hook up the propose system with future National grid. Moreover, a power line carrier communication has been established in order to control every consumer from LDC which can ensure a reliable mini grid system for the off grid area in this paper. This kind of efficient & reliable AC mini grid can be a realistic solution for the off-grid areas of Bangladesh.
