After the first such unofficial trips were made, it is possible to observe a gradual increase in group and individual tourism by forcibly displaced Germans to Czechoslovakia from the second half of the 1950s. In this article, we focus on one of the many subjects related to Heimattourismus, namely, Sudeten German tourists' reflections about the local populations in their former homeland and the stereotypes constructed by them about these locals. We investigate this subject by analysing reports about such travel that were published by these forcibly displaced persons and expellees in their periodicals from the time such trips began until the mid-1960s.

The first illegal border crossings occurred immediately after the forced displacement. The first legal travels to Czechoslovakia can be seen from the second half of the 1950s as a response to the loosening Czechoslovak tourism and visa policies, as well as the improving economic situation of displaced persons. This text focuses on the narrative reflection of these specific trips, i.e. the stay in the "old home" by the actors of this type of tourism. Through biographical narrative interviews, the author looks for the importance attributed to these "places of return" which have undergone a significant social and cultural transformation during the absence of displaced persons.

For the German minority in the Czech Republic too, language plays an important role in group identity. Its current language situation is a result of the negative historic developments after World War II and under the communist regime. Due to the forced resettlement of most German-speaking inhabitants and the subsequent assimilation policies of the communist regime, the German community underwent strong cultural and language assimilation, which is also attested by the steady decline of its membership. The study focuses on issues of the language situation of the German minority and the revitalization efforts that have been undertaken by its elite in cooperation with other relevant institutions. A research survey of the main representatives of the minority and its regional associations demonstrates their evaluations of the ways in which German language is currently used and promoted in the Czech Republic, and it also points to the different strategies they have been striving to implement to reverse the language shift.

For centuries, it was largely shaped by the German-speaking population. The authors will focus here on the question of historical consciousness of the Karlovy Vary Region current residents, when it comes to the German past of the region in which they live. Using a quantitative survey and visualisation by means of comparative mental maps of the Gould and Lynch type, they examine the views of and attitudes to selected historical milestones in Czech-German relations, historical consciousness of the existence of the German population and its effect in the region under study and, last but not least, the relationship to the current German ethnic minority.

In the study, the family is seen as a specific social framework in which the past is retrieved. Generations are characterized in a biological sequence, with only the oldest “generation of experience” defined by Karl Mannheim. The research of generational family memory focuses on the actor’s reception through an analysis and interpretation of narrative and oral-history interviews with representatives of generations while exploring the way family memory is mediated. Specifically, the authors inquire into the role the memory media play in their materialised form, i.e. artefacts that act as an impulse and source of remembrance narrative, in the process of generational transmission of memories in families...

The authors analyse two patriotic magazines (Heimatzeitschrift) from the beginning of their publishing until the end of the twentieth century. The patriotic magazines are understood as media of collective memory of the social group of those forcibly displaced. Based on the study of empiric material, the representations of the forced displacement can be analytically divided into three groups. The "expulsion" is represented as: 1) loss of home; 2) new start, and 3) historical grievance. The authors show that the forced displacement in connection with the loss of the (old) home country is a basic theme for the above-mentioned magazines. In the magazines, the representations thereof are closely associated with the memory politics of patriotic organizations with their exactly defined interpretation of history, claiming the right for the motherland, and enforcement of the victimization discourse.

The families were chosen based on the oldest generation´s personal experience with the forced displacement after World War II (a family of “deported” Germans living in Germany today and a family of German origin remaining in Czechoslovakia after 1945). The analysis focusses on family memory, whereby the authors ask not only about the content of memories of persons who are part of the “generation of experience”, but also about the transmission of these contents down to the generation of children and grandchildren, as well as about in which way the follow-up generations came to terms with the experience of the oldest generation. The authors point out the importance of family memory to create the identity ofpersons participating in that memory, and they demonstrate one of possible types of family remembering, whereby the youngest and the oldest generation are its major participants (transgenerational remembering).
