Medieval Svaneti. Objects, Images, and Bodies in Dialogue with Built and Natural Spaces; Convivium Supplementum, 2023

We received an extremely warm welcome from our hosts, notably from the mək'ilär who so generously opened to us their churches and thus their incredible treasures. This book is warmly dedicated to them all. Without the partnership of important institutions, this excursion and the publication of the present book would never have been possible. Great thanks are due to the G. Chubinashvili National Research Centre for Georgian Art History and Heritage Preservation in Tbilisi, and the Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography in Mest'ia. Working cooperatively with these important institutions was of unbelievable value for us. Moreover, we thank the Swiss National Science Foundation for its financial support for this publication. My deepest thanks go to Ekaterine Gedevanishvili, Irene Giviashvili, Mariam Japaridze, and Tsitsino Guledani, for their manifold and tireless help and support during the trip and the conference. I wish to thank Ivan Foletti for including this volume in the Convivium Supplementum series, and I am deeply grateful in particular to Natália Gachallová who has cared for this publication with foresight and thoroughness. Finally, I would like to thank all the authors for their thoughtful contributions to this volume, and especially, of course, my two co-editors, Natalia Chitishvili and Michele Bacci, for their excellent and nice collaboration.
Staging the Ruler's Body in Medieval Cultures: A Comparative Perspective, eds. M. Bacci, G. Grigoryan, M. Studer-Karlen (Brepols, 2023), 2023

The event was organized with the support of the Conférence Universitaire de Suisse occidentale (CUSO), the Mediävistisches Institut and the Institut du monde antique et byzantin of the University of Fribourg, and the Society for the Medieval Mediterranean. The publication of the present book was made possible by the financial support of the Swiss National Science Foundation and the Council of the University of Fribourg. We warmly thank all these institutions and, above all, the contributors of this volume. Our special thanks go to Julia Oswald for her careful copy-editing, Adélaïde Mornod for help with the index, and Johan van der Beke and the rest of the team at Brepols and Harvey Miller for their engagement in the production of this book.

Greeks bearing gifts: The Icon of Xaxuli and Enamel Diplomacy between Byzantium and Georgia-The X... more Greeks bearing gifts: The Icon of Xaxuli and Enamel Diplomacy between Byzantium and Georgia-The Xaxuli Triptych is the most important icon in Georgia. This paper examines the surviving fragments of the image at the center of the icon: the enamel hands and face of the Mother of God. Despite the fame of the triptych, the central icon has received relatively little attention. This paper suggests that the icon is best understood as a gift from the Byzantine emperor Basil ii to Davit' kouropalates of Tao-Klarjet'i, the southwestern region of medieval Georgia. This fits the context of the growing exchange of art and ideas between the two states in this period before Basil ii's invasions of Georgia after the death of Davit' kouropalates in 1000/1001. The article concludes by suggesting that the later reworking of the icon into a triptych effectively hid its Byzantine origins and represented the icon as a Georgian work.

This has been an immensely complicated undertaking, which also benefited from the constructive input of external reviewers.
