Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 06:05, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

Category:Photos misused as evidences of Nanjing Massacre
[edit]It should just be "evidence", not "evidences". --Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 18:56, 17 June 2010 (UTC)
Category discussion notification | Category:Photos misused as evidence of Nanjing Massacre has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. |

Nanking Massacre and your POV-pushing categorization
[edit]Hi, MtBell. We have to chose encyclopedic and neutral names for categories. We don't behave like Chinese chauvinists and Japanese ultra nationalists. Thank you. Takabeg (talk) 21:02, 20 June 2013 (UTC)
As to zh:長谷川清, even if in Chinese Wikipedia zh:Category:南京大屠杀参与者 (participants to the Nanking Massacre) is added, the article doesn't mention to his participation, and there are no source that prove it. Thank you. Takabeg (talk) 21:11, 20 June 2013 (UTC)
- Please remember that Wikipedia is not a reliable source. Though 长谷川's role in Nanjing Massacre is not mentioned in a wikipedia article, it does'nt spare his guilt. According to postwar memoirs by Japanese officers, his fleet killed tens of thousand civilians and unarmed soldiers who was then crossing the Yangtze River. --MtBell (talk) 21:17, 20 June 2013 (UTC)
- Wikipedia is not a reliable source, but Wikipedia is not field for propagandas. First of all, you have to edit articles of wikipedias (English, Chinese, Japanese etc...), and then shall we solve disputes in Commons. And do you know notable survivors of the Nanking Massacre ? I'm planning to create sub categories (participants, survivors, researchers etc.. ) of People associated with the Nanjing Massacre. Thank you. Takabeg (talk) 21:31, 20 June 2013 (UTC)
- I changed the category under the name "Japanese related to atrocities in Nanjing Massacre". This is my final position. If you have any question about the role of these Japanese in the massacre, please leave me a message and I will show you the literature. --MtBell (talk) 21:30, 20 June 2013 (UTC)
- Japanese related to atrocities in Nanjing Massacre". is too POV-pushing name. As you know, even in Chinese Wikipedia, Participants to the Nanking Massacre (zh:Category:南京大屠杀参与者) is used. Please stop POV-pushing categorization. Please !Takabeg (talk) 21:35, 20 June 2013 (UTC)
- If you consider "Japanese who participated in Nanjing Massacre" as appropriate, this name also looks fine to me. But I have to reject being criticized as a propaganda-purposed editor. I hope you can read the Chinese article zh:南京大屠杀 which provides more sources and details than any other versions in the entire WP, not even to mention the ja version in which any photo showing Japanese atrocities is rejected. --MtBell (talk) 21:43, 20 June 2013 (UTC)
- I'm sorry but I can accept neither Chinese national POV nor Japanese national POV. Takabeg (talk) 21:50, 20 June 2013 (UTC)

Photos taken during the Second Sino-Japanese War
[edit]I noticed that you have tagged "no source" to many photos of the war and these photos would be deleted quite soon. I am reverting all you speedy deletion requests to these photos.
Please be aware that any photo, either taken by Chinese or Japanese, during the war which ended in 1945 is public domain according to the copyright laws of China and Japan. Unless you have proofs showing that the copyright has not expired and is holding by another nationality, please DO NOT start any speedy deletion request, because most of them are clearly public domain. Please be very cautious with these historical photos which are widely used accross various Wikipedia projects. --MtBell (talk) 10:37, 3 July 2013 (UTC)
- They are not speedy deletion. It's very cleat that there are no sources for images. As long as I know, administrators will give users time. If you (and/or I, other users) can provide sources, they will not be deleted. Note: PD-China doesn't cover photos personally taken before 1945. In any cases, sources have to be provided. Takabeg (talk) 10:45, 3 July 2013 (UTC)
- P.S. As we know, PD-China can be used for photos of juristic person. So we cannot use PD-China without providing original sources. Takabeg (talk) 10:51, 3 July 2013 (UTC)
- Your requests lead to speedy deletion. The China copyright law guarantees all anonymous photos in public domain 50 years after their creation. If you can't provide the author's name and a publication date which is later than 1946, it is fair to assume its copyright expired. --MtBell (talk) 10:58, 3 July 2013 (UTC)
- Even if we claim that photos are anonymous work, we need original sources. Do you understand ? Anyway I don't think admins delete them speedily. When nobody cannot provide sources for them, they cannot become permanent. Unless nobody provide original sources, other users will delete them in the near future. P.S. Please stop personal attack like this. Thank you. Takabeg (talk) 11:03, 3 July 2013 (UTC)

Do you know where are original uploaders of those sourceless images ? I think they are the best persons to solve these problem. Because they must have information on original sources. Sorry to hear that you've talked of "random links". Could you explain if your uploads are from "random links" or original publication:
- File:Kiichiro Higuchi.jpg from a blog: http://blog.livedoor.jp/wildhorse38/archives/51698110.html
- File:Norihiro_Yasue.jpg from http://berkovich-zametki.com/2009/Zametki/Nomer20/Zinberg1.php
--MtBell (talk) 22:16, 4 July 2013 (UTC)
- We cannot call them random links. Because I took images from those links. And PD-Japan-oldphoto is valid to both images. I personally think PD-Japan-oldphoto is problematic tag, because copyrights of most of them are accepted abroad. But this tag is convenient for commons users at present. In any cases, PD-China is different from PD-Japan-oldphoto. When the image was taken before 1946 by Japanese photographer, to use PD-Japan, we have to prove the date of creation of that image. On the other hand, we have to prove the date of publication to use PD-China. Do you understand ? Takabeg (talk) 23:53, 4 July 2013 (UTC)
- Mr Takabeg, now it is clear that you are quite familiar with PD-Japan-oldphoto and you began to use this tag long ago. Why did you nominate Deletion requests/File:Bodies of Chinese massacred and burned by Japanese troops in Nanjing (Murase Moriyasa's photo).jpg for deletion in the name of "copyvio" and pretend unfamiliar with that tag? I would not say you are playing double standand but I am informing you that I will not discuss with a dishonest person in the talk page any more. If you want to challenge the copyright status of those PD-China photos, just go and start a deletion request with your "proofs", and we will meet there. --MtBell (talk) 01:38, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

PD-China
File:GDP of China in RMB(1953-2008).png
[edit]I am working on an SVG version of File:GDP of China in RMB(1953-2008).png but I believe the scale is off by 10 - it appears that it should range from 10^1 to 10^5 instead of from 10^2 to 10^6. I am basing this both on the linear chart at File:Prc1952-2005gdp.gif and on the data that I have been able to find, for example the table at http://www.chinability.com/GDP.htm . I can upload a correction, or if you prefer can allow you to do that. Delphi234 (talk) 23:28, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
- Hi. The image was originally plotted for a Chinese article, so the GDP (Y-axis) is presented in 10^8 (亿) not 10^9 (billion). Since this file is no more used in any Wikipedia project, please just feel free to make any change you want. --MtBell (talk) 05:49, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
- No need. I will just make a note in the description that the units are 亿. Delphi234 (talk) 07:07, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks. --MtBell (talk) 08:41, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
- If you do wish to use the SVG it is trivial to change the scale to units of 100 million. Delphi234 (talk) 07:13, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
- No need. I will just make a note in the description that the units are 亿. Delphi234 (talk) 07:07, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
By the way, I have created a couple of hundred translations of images into Chinese and it would be helpful to check the translations to see if they are acceptable. For groups of images, like the population graphs, you can just tell me the changes that are needed, and I can make them to all of them. You can find most of them in the Category:Translation possible - SVG (switch). I have been using "Chinese (Traditional)" for zh, and am not sure that is correct. Switch though, does not allow multiple versions of a specific language, so zh-yue etc. would need to be in a separate file. Should I be using "Chinese (Simplified)" instead, for zh? Delphi234 (talk) 07:32, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
- @Delphi234: Thank you for your great works. I will check the Chinese labels. For the simplified/traditional character problem, IMHO, it would be better if your SVG files can switch between simplified Chinese (zh-hans) and traditional Chinese (zh-hant). Two separate files for zh-hans and zh-hant are also acceptable. In zhwp, we use an auto-conversion system for handling simplified/traditional Chinese characters. We use zh-hans for simplified Chinese users and zh-hant for traditional Chinese users. The system will automatically determine which characters (and sometimes images if both versions have been created) should be displayed according to user preferences. --MtBell (talk) 08:41, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
- How simple and elegant a solution! As mentioned, a limitation of switch is that only one variation of a language can be included. So separate en-British, en-American, en-Australian, etc. can not be included, and separate files need to be created to separate zh-hans and zh-hant. I am curious though, just how separate images can be displayed by user preference. Can you give an example of that? Do the images need to be named in a certain way? I know that only png conversions of svg are displayed in the website page. Since I have been creating traditional, I guess for each image I should be creating a -zh-hans version. What name does it need to use to be automatically used for anyone who has chosen simplified characters? Adding it each time will be easy, but since I only speak English, the translations may need to be corrected. Delphi234 (talk) 20:34, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
- @Delphi234: The conversion codes in zhwp are somehow like this: -{zh-hans:foo1;zh-hant:foo2}-. You may find an example here. To the right of the "talk page" button (top-left) are the language dropdown buttons: zh, zh-hans, zh-hant, etc. One may set his/her language choice in zh:Special:Preferences. --MtBell (talk) 22:44, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
- I see. So the name of the file can be anything. Delphi234 (talk) 00:41, 15 December 2014 (UTC)
- Yes.--MtBell (talk) 01:25, 15 December 2014 (UTC)

[edit]Copyright status: File:Japanese bayonet practice with dead Chinese near Tianjin.jpg
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Japanese bayonet practice with dead Chinese near Tianjin.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. Thanks for uploading File:Xuda01.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT ([email protected]). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Xuda01.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |
