Hello, Delusion23!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hello Delusion23. Please see edits 1, 2, 3, 4 and many more from 3 October 2011. None of them have border with South Sudan. My block prevented you to keep doing it. For me it looked at the time as some kind of vanadalizm. But it is only your mistake I accept it and ask you to be more cerful next. Thanks for your cooperation. Geagea (talk) 00:30, 4 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Excuse me but why did you post a warning on my talk page? It's customary to at least give a reason when you do this. If you don't give a reason I shall remove it. Cheers. Delusion23 (talk) 23:11, 3 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
I see that you have reverted all of the edits I made adding files to this category: Category:Maps needing South Sudan political boundaries. All of the maps I added need updating with the borders of South Sudan which became independent in July. This category was created so that they may be grouped together and updated by those with the ability to do so. This forms part of the Category:Maps needing amended boundaries. I think you overreacted in giving me a level 4 vandalism warning without a stated reason. Unless there is something wrong with this category, I'll revert your reverts tomorrow. Cheers again. Delusion23 (talk) 23:23, 3 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hi, Geagea. I think there has been a misunderstanding here. The Category:Maps needing South Sudan political boundaries is not for countries that have borders with South Sudan. It's for every image that needs updating with the fact that South Sudan and Sudan now have a border. For example, in images 1, 2, 3 and 4 you can see that the image covers the whole of Africa, not just Georgia, Afghanistan or Iran. In these images, Sudan is represented as it was before the independence of South Sudan. It is this which needs updating. Sorry that I didn't explain myself well earlier. The links to the categories didn't show up. I'll revert the reverts now. Cheers :) Delusion23 (talk) 10:01, 4 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

I apologize for my misunderstanding and for blocking you for two hours. I removed the vandalism warning from your talk page. Pleas keep doing the good warking. Geagea (talk) 10:12, 4 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

No worries, you too. Glad we got this sorted out. :) Delusion23 (talk) 10:14, 4 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

South Sudan boundaries

edit

Hello there,
Could I ask that you be more careful when adding Category:Maps needing South Sudan political boundaries to files. Not all maps showing undivided Sudan need South Sudan; when the map shows a historic situation. For example you added it to File:Libya Sahel.png, which showed the founding member states of the Community of Sahara-Sahel states, as it was founded in 1998. Thanks, Quintucket (talk) 02:12, 31 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

edit

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Hello.

This is my last request from you for this year.

Can you make these corrections in File:Countries driving on the left or right 1900.svg?

In 1900, these places drove on the left and thus need to be colored in blue:

  • Sweden
  • Finland
  • Austro-Hungarian Empire
  • Bosnia
  • Portuguese Timor (East Timor)
  • South Sudan (then part of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan)
  • Aden Colony (South Yemen)
  • Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia

In 1900, these places drove on the right and thus need to be colored in red:

  • Brazil
  • Paraguay
  • South Korea (then part of a unified Korea)

Please see the articles en:Left- and right-hand traffic and en:List of countries with left-hand traffic and the sources.

Thank you.

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:2013 Wien 0373 (10387243305).jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Hello.

Can you add the border of South Sudan, which became independent in 2011, in the widely used maps File:BSEC Map.png, File:Borderless countries.PNG and File:People's Republics.png?

Can you remove the de facto Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (Artsakh) which ceased to exist in 2023 in File:Plastic bag legislation.svg?

Can you remove the flag of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (Artsakh) and remove the box surrounding the flags of Artsakh and Armenia in File:Supranational PostSoviet Bodies RU.png?

It has been removed in the original English version File:Supranational PostSoviet Bodies-en.svg.

Can you remove the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, and add a blue dot for Ghana as a 97.7 km long 1 435 mm gauge rail track was built there [1], in File:Rail gauge world.png, File:Rail gauge world.svg and File:Rail gauge world with legend.svg?

Yours sincerely, Oirattas (talk) 15:56, 24 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

I've done the plastic one. The others may be beyond my Inkscape skill I'm afraid. DelUsion23 (talk) 20:01, 24 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
