Access to student quality depends on an university’s position relative to other institutions. Positional competition is a zero-sum game. To overtake its competitors, a player needs to improve its educational technology, differentiate its production and secure additional resources. The process triggers a cascade of innovations trickling down the hierarchy. Among French business schools, positions in rankings are stable at the top, but more fluid in the center of the distribution. We show how the selective admission process of students both prompts inertia and allows schools to deploy strategies of competitive differentiation.
