Laboratory Schools

This lecture introduces the theory and practice of art education at the Lab Schools of the University of Chicago. The main tenets of Dewey’s educational philosophy that have been implemented at the Lab Schools are discussed: Experiential and cooperative learning, connection to the student’s life, and becoming a better citizen. It provides some examples of teaching and learning to demonstrate how those tenets would be put into practice in the 21st century art education in the lower and middle schools.

This tree is not an icon, but a scientific hypothesis. It offers the simplest interpretation of the genetic sequences that scientists have studied, how genes have mutated from one form to another. As new species are discovered and new genes are sequenced, the simplest interpretation may demand that some of the branches be rearranged. But despite a surge of new data, this tree has retained its basic structure, which suggests that it is fundamentally sound.

Little in the study of history illustrates the bias of the selective timeframe quite like the study of empire. In the great empires of the past selecting a time frame shapes not only the questions asked, but the results, often to the point of invalidating a useful past. Etymologists, for whom looking backward is a method of seeking origin, not justification or revision, are often freer to explore the historical origins than historians; with this idea firmly in mind, this paper seeks to examine the contentious issue of Ottoman capitulations to the Western Empires in a etymological manner that follows the evolution and usage of the word 'capitulation' and considers alternative historiographical methodologies that would assist in understanding the structural forces and changes overtime. Put simply, the use of the long-term in the study of empire allows a recovery of important issues that are rendered invisible, intentionally or otherwise, by a limited timeframe.

A plan for creating a full inclusive approach to collections development for an undergraduate university library, with a brief look at the three main pedagogical reasons many students, particularly marginalized students, find American history such a bitter pill

The inspiration for this critical pedagogy self-study of my own racial identity in the classroom and also instructional methods comes from my own experiences in racist and colorblind schools, but also, the capacity for true transformative education for my own students at MPAA and implications for future practice and research methods. Furthermore, I arrived at the critical question of how does the racial identity and consciousness of a Black educator inform how I teach race in the classroom but more importantly the intense pressures I face to discuss these issue with my black students who have been indoctrinated by the colorblind environment of the school to think race is inconsequential (a historical event) not vital to understanding themselves and ultimately seizing freedom. While, students recognize the somewhat blatant injustices demonstrated through police brutality and violence against Black men, they fail to make the connections to the more latent forms of racism experienced by many Black Americans on a daily basis.

The aim of this paper is to bring the role of Black Women in the Black Liberation movements in South Africa and the United States to the center. While, in Black Consciousness and Black Power the texts were often non-gender their silencing of the unique struggles of Black women led to the creation of organizations like the Federation of South African Women, the Black Women’s Liberation Committee and lastly, the Third World Women’s Alliances. These women recognized that true liberation for the Black communities in the United States and in South Africa was impossible with the continual oppression of the Black woman. Through a brief narrative of the political theories of the majority African political movements and the American ones, it will be clear to the reader that Black women not only were autonomous in their petitions for political power, but they also faced similar threats of governmental violence, political bans, and even assassination that their Black male counterparts faced.  However, much of the male-dominated freedom movements were centered on the emasculating effects of legalized segregation, economic disadvantages, and psychological oppression. This paper is an attempt to validate the role of Black Women in the globalization of blackness and the fight for the full liberation of Black people.
