I am a Research Scholar of History from Kolkata (West Bengal, India). After Graduating from Presidency College, I have done my Post- Graduation and Doctorate from University of Calcutta, Department of Islamic History and Culture. My Doctoral thesis is entitled 'Islamic Architecture during the Nawabs of Murshidabad (AD 1704-1881)'. History of Art and Architecture of Medieval and early modern India and Asia minor is my passion. Presently I am working as a Research Assistant at Centre for Archaeological Studies and Training, Eastern India in a project on Islamic Heritage of West Bengal from AD 1205-1857.

The Nawabi city of Murshidabad is famous for Hazarduari and Imambara. The Imambar, the largest in... more The Nawabi city of Murshidabad is famous for Hazarduari and Imambara. The Imambar, the largest in Eastern India, has been mentioned in every major works on Murshidabad. But none of the works have studied this this structure holistically with its architectural nuances and purposes. The small but unique mosque inside the Imambara complex also has escaped scholarly notice. The in situ inscription although is listed, but hardly ever gets a mention in the study of the Imambara.

A brief history of this town along with its morphological aspect, urban process, distribution of population and the present condition has been discussed here. Photographs of different monuments, festivals and food are an integral part of this write up. The scope of tourism and its betterment has also been included. The article tries to trace Murshidabad from its glorious past of a Nawabi capital to a neglected tourist town of the present time.

The chapter has been published in the book, History of Bangladesh, Sultanate and Mughal Periods (... more The chapter has been published in the book, History of Bangladesh, Sultanate and Mughal Periods (c. 1200 to 1800 CE), Vol 1, Political History edited by Abdul Momin Chowdhury. It is a chapter on the urban process took place in the Nawabi capital of Murshidabad during the late Mughal period. The extant edifices played a pivotal role in tracing the urbanisation of the flourishing city of Murshidabad. A map has also been plotted for an in depth study of how the city gradually developed.

European Influence on the Architectural Decoration of Murshidabad

Murshidabad was the capital of the Nawabs of Murshidabad from 1717 to 1881 AD. But the city start... more Murshidabad was the capital of the Nawabs of Murshidabad from 1717 to 1881 AD. But the city started to flourish from 1704 AD. The monuments scattered all over the present city of Lalbagh were patronised by the rulers and nobles as well as wealthy person of the society. As the monuments are built through a period of about 177 years, the decorative motifs on these monuments bear a sign of Sultanate, Mughal, indigenous and European influence. The Britishers controlled the economic and political condition of the then Bengal suba, which reflects on the monuments built in the early to mid 19th Century. The present paper has discussed the European decorative features found on the walls of the edifices situated in the nook and corner of the city of Murshidabad.

Interestingly, a good number of monuments were built by the women folks at different time period. The patrons sometimes were members of the royal family and sometimes some obscure ladies. of whom we do not find mention in history. The present article will try throw light to such monuments and their patrons.

The city contains about 50 mosques some of them are well known and many of them are almost obscure or very less known. Not much has been written also about the said monuments. Among the many mosques built in the period of Nawabs of Murshidabad, some were patronized by the nobles of the royal court. Some of them are published and some are not been noticed yet. The location of the mosque in the city as well as the history and architectural details of the mosques are studied through this paper.
