2. To provide basic concept knowledge concerning various type of materials and its functions;
3. To provide an introduction and also as a basic reference before they make a decision to the selection of the materials;
4. To offer understanding and consideration for choosing the suitable study program and have a strong motivation in learning the latter courses.

The chilled casting method is widely used in the metal casting industry to accelerate the mold... more The chilled casting method is widely used in the metal casting industry to accelerate the mold's cooling rate. This method is very suitable for surface hardening by depositing the elements contained in the chill material onto the surface of the object being cast. One of the factors that influence surface hardness characteristics is the diffusion temperature. This study aims to determine the microhardness, surface layer thickness, and the element contained on the surface. The main material produced into Y-Block is ductile cast iron, the chill material is SS 304 plate with a thickness of 0.2mm. However, before the liquid material is poured into a mold, the chill plate is inserted into the surface of the pattern in the mold, then the plate was preheated. The result showed that the highest preheating temperature has produced microstructure around the surface area namely eutectic carbide of (FeCr)7C3, and (FeCr)3C. Abstrak Salah satu cara untuk memperpanjang umur roda gigi adalah meminimalkan distorsi pada saat... more Abstrak Salah satu cara untuk memperpanjang umur roda gigi adalah meminimalkan distorsi pada saat proses pembuatannya terutama proses perlakuan panas. Penelitian bertujuan untuk menganalisis distorsi yang timbul pada roda gigi setelah proses perlakuan panas. Material roda gigi adalah AISI 1045 dengan modul (m)1,75; jumlah gigi (z) 29. Roda gigi diberi perlakuan panas dalam tungku pada temperatur 800 O C selama 30 menit kemudian dicelup kedalam air, selanjutnya dianalisa struktur mikro, kekerasan dan dilakukan pengukuran dimensi. Selanjutnya dikeraskan lagi permukaanya dengan proses induksi pada temperatur 820 O C waktu penahanan 35 detik kemudian dianalisis lagi. Hasil pengerasan dalam tungku adalah 62,4 HRC dimana struktur mikronya adalah martensit. Hasil pengerasan permukaan mencapai 62,9 HRC, lapisan kekerasan 6 mm dari kepala gigi dan fasanya adalah martensit. dan lapisan dalam mempunyai kekerasan 49 HRC dengan fasa martensit+perlit. Distorsi yang diukur adalah pada proses perlakuan panas keseluruhan roda gigi dan distorsi pada pengerasan permukaan mengunakan induction hardening. Distorsi atau penyusutan yang tertinggi pada perlakuan panas keseluruhan adalah 3,75% pada ketebalan gigi; sedangkan penyusutan terendah adalah 0,13% pada diameter lingkaran kepala. Penyusutan akibat pengerasan permukaan roda gigi diperoleh 1,59% dan yang terendah adalah 0,01%.
