The article is aimed at analyzing the image of the ossetian Nart bogatyr and its elements (name, external characteristics, epic weapon), his interaction with the heroic horse, the first feat, the dispute about the ideal hero and other motives of his epic biography. The article asks whether it is possible to establish a correspondence between a collective folklore image and its historical prototypes.
The results of the study show that the Nart hero is an image of a hero, which corresponds to the dominant ideas about the ideal warrior among the medieval Alans.

The paper aims to analyze the specifics of historical knowledge and the forms of its representation in the conditions of the modern Caucasus. The pragmatics of the use of ready-made and construction of new symbols of the past in the context of ethno-national historical writing is in the focus of the analysis.
The research results show that new ethno-political elites cultivate ethnocentric and mythologized versions of national history, use them as "objective bases" for their political projects. The dependence of historians on the communist ideology of the Soviet era was replaced by dependence on ethno-national ideologies and elites in the post-Soviet period.
The paper examines the chronotope of the Ossetian Nart epic; the epic space, its characteristics are in the focus of the research. The paper asks what role does the local context play in the development of an epic action, what are the ways of representing the edge / border in Ossetian Nart Tales, how the imaginary epic geography of the Nart universe and the real geography of the Black Sea region and the Caucasus relate to each other.
The results indicate that three ways of representing the border / edge are in the Ossetian Nart epic: as the boundaries of the inhabited land in general (beyond which the kingdom of the dead is located); marked by an epic people, the etymology the name of which is connected with the root "end", "edge"; marked by large objects of imaginary epic geography, which reflects the real map of the North Caucasus in its most general form (the Main Caucasian Range, the Black and Azov Seas, the Don, the Caspian Sea and the Volga).

The economy of the early nomads of the Eurasian steppes has traditionally been studied as the process of material production, distribution and consumption, but this angle does not allow us to consider the economy through the models embedded in the culture, to think over the symbolic aspects of production and specific forms of behavior. Analysis of a number of phenomena in the life of nomadic societies is possible within the framework of the prestigious economy complex. An adequate explanatory model and language of prestigious economy institutes description are developed within the confines of the substantive theory, which considers tribal and archaic economies as qualitatively different from the modern economy. Elements of the prestigious economy in the early nomadic societies are the main subject of this article. The traditional paradigm in the early nomads’ economy study is based on a certain sum of the sources used (written tradition, archeology, linguistics). Of great value for the study of the early nomads’ economy is the data of the Ossetian Nart epic, which carries on the Scythian and SarmatianAlanian epic tradition. The article analyzes the manifestations of the prestigious economy in the early nomads’ society as well as its reflection in the materials of the Ossetian Nart epic. Special attention is paid to the role of cattle as a universal value equivalent for the early nomads and in the epic world, institutions of burglarious raid (balc) and ritual feast (kₒyvd), gift exchange procedures (gifting friends and epic enemies) and redistribution of the spoils of war and sacral offerings. Specific behavior models, such as demonstrative destruction of prestigious objects, are analyzed using the epic material. The authors conclude that there is a principal propinquity between economic practices and related cultural inurements in the materials of the Ossetian Nart epic and that of the societies of Scythians and Sarmatians-Alans of the Western part of Eurasia. Keywords: nomadism, early nomads, substantivism, prestigious economy, gift exchange, redistribution, Ossetian Nart epic
