Olkin
Olkin is a recurring character in The Legend of Zelda series.[2][3]
Biography
Breath of the Wild
Olkin is a Sheikah man who lives in Kakariko Village. He and his wife, Mellie, live in the House near the Common Cooking Area. Olkin manages Olkin's Pumpkins, the field in which he grows Fortified Pumpkins. This is where he sells his Pumpkins, since they are unable to be sold at High Spirits Produce due to his rivalry with Steen.[4] Their animosity originates from the fact that Olkin dislikes Carrots.[1]
When Link first meets Olkin, he will remark on how unusual it is to have a visitor so young.[5] After a moment of hesitation, Olkin jumps into a defensive position and startles Link, wondering if he is perhaps a member of the Yiga Clan.[6] Olkin then relaxes and admits it was a joke.[7] He explains that the Yiga Clan are a group who have sworn their allegiance to Calamity Ganon, and he notes that they have become more active since the Sheikah Towers rose from the ground.[8] However, he assures Link that he can tell he is not affiliated with them.[9] To make it up for scaring Link, Olkin gives Link a Fortified Pumpkin as a gift.[10] He claims that Fortified Pumpkins are a specialty of Kakariko Village, and he invites Link to visit Olkin's Pumpkins if he wants more.[11]
In the morning, Olkin will head to Olkin's Pumpkins to begin tending to his crops. When Link approaches him during this time, he assumes that he is interested in buying a Fortified Pumpkin, and he asks him to wait until he gets there.[12] If Link speaks to him while he is in his field, Olkin asks if he enjoyed the Fortified Pumpkin that he gave earlier.[13] He reveals that eating them makes one stronger, which is why he asks Mellie to Cook them for dinner.[14] When Link asks what he means by Cooking, Olkin explains that using Fortified Pumpkins will result in Food that increases one's Defense, and he encourages Link to experiment.[15] If Link ends their conversation, Olkin brings up Steen's belief that "the best defense is a good offense," instead claiming that "the best offense is a good defense."[16]
Selecting a Fortified Pumpkin in the field prompts Olkin to ask if he would like to purchase it for 20 Rupees.[17] If Link decides to buy it, Olkin will compliment his eye for quality and thank him.[18][19] When Link buys all of the Fortified Pumpkins in his field, Olkin is happy that someone is finding use from them, and he promises that the next harvest will be even better.[20] If Link comes by Olkin's Pumpkins while Olkin is away, he will note how nice the Fortified Pumpkins are, but he realizes Olkin will be mad at him if he takes it without paying.[21]
In the evening, Olkin and Mellie meet at the Common Cooking Area for dinner.[22] Mellie makes their meals using Fortified Pumpkins, which Olkin considers to be delicious.[23] He also likes her Cooking better than Carrots.[24]
At night, Olkin can be found running around Kakariko Village. If Link stops Olkin to talk, he will be surprised that someone else is out so late.[25] He explains that the reason he is awake is because great Defense can be achieved through training one's legs.[26] He also states that training is the way to learn the "secret art of defense."[27] When Link asks what he means, Olkin points out Ta'loh Naeg Shrine nearby, where the swordsman Ta'loh Naeg was enshrined.[28] Supposedly, overcoming the trial inside will allow one to master the "secret art of defense," but no one in Kakariko Village knows what this trial is.[29] Olkin believes that the trial will eventually come to him, so he trains to stay prepared.[30] If Link chooses to end their conversation, Olkin will bring up Steen again, asserting that the strongest people are those who master Defense.[31]
At 3:00 AM, Olkin will stop running and return to his House.[32] When he is at home, Olkin will still comment on Steen's opinions, judging him for his "nonsense."[33] While he is sleeping in his Bed, he will murmur about how Fortified Pumpkins are superior and how he wishes to protect Mellie.[34][35]

Trivia
- In Breath of the Wild, if Link pulls out a Remote Bomb in front of Olkin while he is not at work, he refers to it as a blue Pumpkin.[36]

Actually...to be honest, there's one other crop Kakariko is known for: fortified pumpkins. I'd sell them here, but you see... my mister and the pumpkin farmer—they don't exactly get along. So if you want fortified pumpkins, you'll have to get some straight from Olkin's patch.

Ha! It's rare to see a young lad like you in a village like this!

We call those who swear allegiance to Calamity Ganon the Yiga Clan. They... Well, let's just say they don't take kindly to those who would stand against Ganon. It seems they're active again, ever since that big earthquake the other day.

But don't worry. I don't think you're part of that awful Yiga Clan. I can figure that much out just by lookin' at ya.

Please don't hold it against me. Here, take this in exchange.

Fortified Pumpkins are Kakariko Village's specialty. I put my heart and soul into every one of 'em. They're delicious. If you want more, I can give you some. Just stop by the fields and say hello.

Ha! You wanna buy a fortified pumpkin, don'tcha? Of course ya do! As it were, I'm heading to the fields right now... Mind waiting a bit longer?
— Olkin (Breath of the Wild) - ↑
Did you enjoy that fortified pumpkin?
— Olkin (Breath of the Wild) - ↑
Fortified pumpkins make you stronger. I ask my old lady to keep 'em cookin' so I can eat some every day.
— Olkin (Breath of the Wild) - ↑
[Cookin'?] Use a fortified pumpkin in your cooking to make a dish as firm as my abs. Food like that will increase your defense. Putting lots of fortified pumpkin in the dish is key. Go on—experiment a bit!
— Olkin (Breath of the Wild) - ↑
There's a hotheaded geezer who says, "The best defense is a good offense." Poppycock, I say! I firmly believe the best offense is a good defense.
— Olkin (Breath of the Wild) - ↑
That'll cost ya 20 rupees. Interested?
— Olkin (Breath of the Wild) - ↑
[I'll take it.] Ha! You've got a keen eye to pick that one.

[I'll take it.] Thank goodness!

My wife's tough dishes are made from fortified pumpkins. They're out of this world. There are A LOT of fortified pumpkins in that recipe, I tell ya what.
— Olkin (Breath of the Wild) - ↑
My wife's fortified pumpkin dishes are the best. Way better than a barrel o' carrots, that's for sure!
— Olkin (Breath of the Wild) - ↑
What are you doing out in the middle of the night?
— Olkin (Breath of the Wild) - ↑
As for me, the first step to achieving great defense is training your legs. That's why I'm running at this hour.
— Olkin (Breath of the Wild) - ↑
Training is the best way to learn the secret art of defense, after all.
— Olkin (Breath of the Wild) - ↑
Long ago, a wise master known simply as the swordsman was enshrined—right in this village, no less.

— Olkin (Breath of the Wild) - ↑
That is why I must stay vigilant with my training, so that I am ready whenever this trial presents itself to me!
— Olkin (Breath of the Wild) - ↑
There are savage old men out there who do nothing but prattle on about how the best defense is a good offense... But I know better. I believe that one who masters the art of defense is the strongest of all.
