Hawk hunting

Attracting birds in winter is easier than you might think! The most straightforward way to attract winter birds is to provide the foods they love and offer them safe places to take shelter. Birds are even more beautiful in the midst of a few flurries, so besides helping them get through what can be a tough season, you’ll also be able to enjoy their beauty in your own backyard.

It looks like there is a new Madison Square park hawk! You might remember, the old red-tailed hawk was a favorite of locals and tourists.

These photographs, captured by Bill Doherty, 61, show an osprey making a splash as he swoops down onto a river to catch a fish. The bird was spotted by River Spey in the Scottish Cairngorms.

A medium-sized, compact hawk with broad wings. It is the only resident hawk in Hawaii and occurs only on Hawaii Island. Raptors seen on other islands are migrants. Coloration varies from all dark to white below and dark above. Occurs in dense forest, forest edge, and plantations. Hunts birds, rodents, and large insects among trees and on the ground. Sometimes soars high above the forest canopy. Call is a high, descending “Keeer.”
