The REAL Clan Campbell Tartans!

Read the account of Torquhil Campbell the 28th Mac Cailein Mòr, the thirty-fifth Chief of Clan Campbell, His Grace, the 13th Duke of Argyll (S), and the 6th Duke of Arygll (UK) was born Torquhil Ian Campbell on 29 May 1968. The 13th Duke of Argyll is the son of Sir Ian Campbell, 12th Duke of Argyll and his wife Iona Mary Colquhoun, the daughter of the late Sir Ivar Iain Colquhoun of Luss 8th Bt., Chief of Clan Colquhoun.

Their family histories are full of heads on spikes and villages being razed to the ground, but modern Highland clan chiefs face a very different set of problems – including everything from running 60,000-acre estates to manning the tills at the gift shop. Eleanor Doughty spoke to four clan leaders; portrait photographs by Robert Perry and Richard Cannon.

The Clan Campbell Tartan is an extremely popular and easily recognisable tartan all around the world. It is in fact one of the most popular and widely worn tartans in the world. The tartan was worn by 'The Black Watch', a group that patrolled the highlands after the Jacobite rebellion of 1715. The Black Watch was made up of companies from different clans; one from Clan Fraser of Lovat, Clan Munro, Clan Grant and three from Clan Campbell.

Clan Campbell has long been among the largest of the Scottish highland clans as well as arguably the most powerful. Its history is inseparable from the history of Scotland. This is the first of three volumes that will tell the full history of the clan in a depth never before attempted.
