Medical records of 2670 patients, who were admitted to our hospital's emergency department between January 2005 and June 2007, were reviewed. These patients were referred as acute abdominal pain by general practitioners. The data of patients were devided into sub-groups according to their age, sex, operative status, AS status and having a pathologically confirmed postoperative diagnose of acute appendicitis or not. Logistic regression analysis was performed to find out relationships among the sub-groups. Male gender (1.37), age < 50 (2.4), positive family history (3.16), AS 5-6 (13) and AS 7 (31) increased the risk of acute appendicitis. The sensitivity and specificity of AS was 91.5% and 60.5% respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of family history was 68.9% and 75.4% respectively. Family history is an important parameter while predicting acute appendicitis.

A case of a patient presenting with a multicystic mass in the retroperitoneum that was identified as a cystic lymphangioma is reported. These tumours are commonly confused with other cystic masses in the retroperitoneum.

Recent reports showed that the IL3 gene, colony stimulating factor 2 receptor alpha (CSF2RA), beta (CSF2RB) and IL-3 receptor alpha (IL3RA), the IL-specific receptor subunits for CSF2 and IL3, respectively, are associated with schizophrenia. Aims Association analyses of rs6603272 variant of the IL3R gene and rs4129148 variant of CSFR2A gene with schizophrenia have been studied. Methods We had 166 schizophrenic patients and 246 healthy controls. In both case control studies, a PCR-RFLP method was used. Results The genoype frequencies of the IL3R gene rs6603272 variant were TT, 54.8, TG, 40.4, GG, 4.8 % in cases, TT, 57.7, TG, 36.2 and GG, 6.1% in controls. The frequency of T allele in controls and cases was 76% and 75% respectively. Similarly, the genotype frequencies of the CSFR2A gene rs4129148 variant were GG, 44.6; GC,39.8; CC,15.7 % in cases and GG,43.9; GC,43.1; and CC, 13.0% in controls. The G allele frequency was 64% in cases and 65% in controls. Conclusion In our study, we did not find an association between the rs66033272 variant of IL3RA gene and schizophrenia (χ2=0.896; P=0.639). Nor did we find an association between the CSFR2A rs4129148 variant and schizophrenia (χ2= 0.770; P=0.681)

It occurs in up to 15% of menstruating women and often goes undetected. Some cases of soft-tissue involvement have been reported, particularly in the skin and subjacent tissues of surgical scars. However, we came cross a 42-year-old female patient with millimetric focal lesions in a groin hernia sac. A case report and a review of the literature are presented. Although definitive diagnosis still requires biopsy, the patient's cyclic symptoms and history of previous uterine surgery should suggest the correct diagnosis.

Nevertheless, it can also become a mortal toxin when applied in a wrong way. The application routes of the prescribed drug should be rigorously described to patients and detailed instructions regarding the ways of application such as intravesical application should be given to the persons taking this medicine (Ref. 9).

Emergency surgery with 75 cm small bowel resection was performed.

A genome-wide survey of 114 TOF patients and their unaffected parents identified 11 de novo copy number variants (CNVs) that were absent or extremely rare (<0.1%) in 2,265 controls. A second, independent TOF cohort (n = 398) was then examined for additional CNVs at these loci. In 1% (5/512, p = 0.0002, OR = 22.3) of non-syndromic sporadic TOF cases we identified CNVs at chromosome 1q21.1. Recurrent CNVs were also identified at 3p25.1, 7p21.3 and 22q11.2. CNVs in a single TOF case occurred at six loci, two that encode known (NOTCH1, JAG1) disease genes. Our data predicts that at least 10% (4.5-15.5, 95% CI) of sporadic, non-syndromic TOF reflects de novo CNVs and implicates mutations within these loci as etiologic in other cases of TOF.

Also, it is showed that it prevents postsurgical peritoneal adhesions in rats. It is aimed to evaluate its effects on gastrointestinal wound healing. Thirty Wistar albino rats were divided into three groups as control, subcutan, and intraperitoneal enoxaparin groups. Left colon anastomoses were performed. On postoperative seventh day, anastomotic healing was evaluated by measuring anastomotic bursting pressure, tissue hydroxyproline levels, and histopathological examination. The anastomotic bursting pressure was highest in subcutan enoxaparin group (p &amp;amp;amp;lt; 0.001), intraperitoneal enoxaparin group (p &amp;amp;amp;lt; 0.01) came the second, and the control group has the worst value. The hydroxyproline results were found nearly similar to the bursting pressure values (subcutan (p &amp;amp;amp;lt; 0.001) &amp;amp;amp;gt; intraperitoneal (p &amp;amp;amp;lt; 0.05) &amp;amp;amp;gt; control). Neovascularization in subcutan group (p &amp;amp;amp;lt; 0.001) has a statistically significant difference to other groups. Enoxaparin did not interfere with colonic anastomotic resistance but improved the intestinal wound healing.

Forty-eight Ross 308 breeder hens were fed on diets containing AF (0 or 100 µg/kg) and SC (0 or 1 g/kg) in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. Red blood cell (RBC), white blood cell (WBC), and platelet counts, differential leucocyte counts, blood CD3+, CD4+, CD8+ and CD5+ T cell ratios, phagocytic activity and oxidative burst of heterophils, plasma and liver catalase activity, and malondialdehyde (MDA) and ascorbic acid concentrations were measured. 3. Plasma and liver MDA concentrations increased (P < 0·05), liver catalase activity decreased (P < 0·05) and total WBC count tended to decrease (P = 0·082) in hens fed the contaminated diet. WBC count, monocyte percentage, phagocytic activity and oxidative burst of heterophils increased (P < 0·05), and plasma MDA concentration tended to decrease (P = 0.088) in SC extract supplemented hens. There was a significant interaction between AF and SC on heterophil, lymphocyte, CD5+ cell percentages, and plasma catalase activity. Blood heterophil percentage decreased but lymphocyte percentage increased in hens fed on the AF contaminated diet without SC supplementation. SC supplementation counteracted the negative effect of AF on heterophils and lymphocytes. The CD5+ cell percentage decreased in unsupplemented hens fed the AF contaminated diet and this negative effect was minimised in SC supplemented hens. Plasma catalase activity increased in SC supplemented hens fed the uncontaminated diet whereas the effect of SC decreased in hens fed the AF contaminated diet. 4. The SC reduced some of the some adverse effects of AF, and improved functions of the non-specific immune system. Therefore, the SC extract which has been used for improving productive performance in birds and mammals may also be useful for modulating some of the effects of a low level, chronic dosage of AF.

We describe a case with a clear translocation between the long arm of chromosome 1 and the long arm of chromosome 13. It is possible that the APOE and MTHFR genotypes and lower folate status may also be responsible for the above mentioned translocation.
