Chemical Composition and Antimicrobial Activity of European Propolis

Three propolis samples from Austria, Germany and France were investigated by GC/MS, where eleven ... more Three propolis samples from Austria, Germany and France were investigated by GC/MS, where eleven compounds were being new for propolis. The samples showed some similarities in their qualitative composition. Phenylethyl-Zram'-caffeate, benzyl ferulate and galangin were predominant in German propolis. Benzyl caffeate was predominant in French sample. Pinocembrin was predominant in French and Austrian propolis and rra«s-p-coumaric acid was predominant in all samples. The antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus; Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans was evaluated. Germ an propolis showed the highest antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. While Austrian propolis has the highest activity against Candida albicans. French propolis was effective against all pathogens but less than German and Austrian propolis.

The influence of ethanolic extract of Egyptian propolis (EEP) on hematological changes was invest... more The influence of ethanolic extract of Egyptian propolis (EEP) on hematological changes was investigated in mature mice bearing Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) and concurrently infected with Staphylococcus aureus. The results revealed that the administration of propolis in a daily dose of 100 mg/kg/mouse through intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection was effective in keeping the hematological profile near the normal range as well as decreasing the bacterial load in the blood of infected mice. The combined action of propolis as antitumor and antibacterial as well as its ability to stabilize the hematological parameters in cancer bearing mice suggests the possibility of using propolis as a natural alternative to chemotherapy to avoid the side effects.

In this study, the antimicrobial activity of twelve Saudi honey samples were investigated against 6 potential Gram positive and Gram negative bacterial pathogens. The Gram positive bacteria were Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Streptococcus pyogenes and Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis and the Gram negative bacteria were Klebsiella pneumoniae (ATCC 27736), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853) and Escherichia coli (ATCC 35218). Honey samples were obtained from 12 different floral sources. The collected honey samples were Sidr or birds or Sidr North honey, Tabah honey, Rok honey, spring Lena honey, Harbingers honey, Valley offense (Qtad) honey, Abu roses honey, spring hospitality honey, Agaa mount honey, spring honey pride, then Sair honey, Hegaz Spring honey and Shamar mount honey. The findings indicated that samples with different Saudi honeys were effective antibacterial agents against tested pathogenic bacteria as they inhibited their growth when honey was added to their growing cultures. It was clear that the different types of honey were less effective against E. coli than other bacteria.

A solution of 10% of honey in drinking water was used for 28 days. We evaluated the mortality rate, body weight, lymphoid organ weight and immune response of broiler chicks previously vaccinated with Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) vaccine. The use of honey as a natural feed additive in drinking water through the experiment reduced mortality rates. The results revealed an increase in body weight (73-92.2%), lymphoid organ weight (22-29%) as well as an increase in antibody titer (6-9%) of chicks previously vaccinated with Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) vaccine.

The results revealed that the pH of 3.56 of tested honey, where glucose was 378 mmol/l also the specific gravity was 1.435, while contents of total phenolic and flavonoid and DPPH activity (32.15 mg GAE/100 g honey), (54.27 mg RE/100 g honey) and (127.83 mg/ml) respectively. The mean duration of pilonidal sinus wounds to be ready for surgical closure was 43.5 days in the control (standard dressing) group where the honey dressing group was 28.5 days. Less pain, edema, and foul-smelling discharge were expressed in the honey group if compared with the standard dressing group. 4 Abstract: Antitumor and antioxidant activity of coriander honey was investigated in mice bearin... more 4 Abstract: Antitumor and antioxidant activity of coriander honey was investigated in mice bearing Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC). The administration of coriander honey in a dose of (500 mg/kg/mouse) to EAC bearing mice causes decrease in ascitic fluid volume and viable tumor cell count and increases in nonviable tumor cell count. Administration of coriander honey to EAC bearing mice increases the life span of EAC bearing mice. The administration of coriander honey reduces the level of both lipid peroxidation and superoxide dismutase (SOD) while it increases the level of glutathione (GSH) in comparison to EAC control group and shifting them back to near the normal values. These results suggest the possibility of using coriander honey as an effective antioxidant to prevent or interrupt the process of cancer progression.

Singapore reported its first locally acquired human Plasmodium knowlesi infection in 2007, involv... more Singapore reported its first locally acquired human Plasmodium knowlesi infection in 2007, involving a soldier who had undergone training in a forested area where long-tailed macaques are frequently seen. Comprehensive disease surveillance and monitoring system that was set up after the initial case detected four additional human P. knowlesi cases in 2007 and one in 2008. All involved military personnel who had undergone training in the forested area, and none had traveled out of Singapore 1 month before the onset of symptoms. Screening for malaria parasites on blood obtained from long-tailed macaques revealed that wild monkeys (n ¼ 3) caught from the forested area were infected with P. knowlesi, whereas peri-domestic monkeys (n ¼ 10) caught from a nature reserve park were not infected with any malaria parasites. Phylogenetic analysis of the nonrepeat region of the P. knowlesi csp genes showed that the sequences obtained from the human cases were not distinct from those obtained from wild monkeys. Further, certain genotypes were shared between samples from humans and macaques. Our findings provide evidence that long-tailed macaques are the natural hosts of P. knowlesi in Singapore and the human cases acquired their infection in the same vicinity where these monkeys are found. Further, the risk of acquiring P. knowlesi infection among the general population of Singapore is small as evident from the absence of P. knowlesi in peri-domestic monkeys.

Biosynthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized with the aid of a novel, non-toxic, ... more Biosynthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized with the aid of a novel, non-toxic, eco-friendly biological material. In this study, the potential antimicrobial activity of aqueous nanoparticles conjugated with cow milk and camel milk were investigated against six bacterial strains of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The Gram-positive bacteria were represented by Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) and Streptococcus pyogenes while the Gram-negative bacteria were represented by Klebsiella pneumonia (ATCC 27736), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853) Salmonella typhi (ATCC 19430) and Escherichia coli (ATCC 35218). The results indicated that aqueous silver nanoparticles conjugated with cow and camel milks were effective antibacterial agents against the tested pathogenic bacterial strains. But the aqueous silver nanoparticles conjugated with camel milk are more effective than its counterpart with cow milk. The results indicated that aqueous silver nanoparticles conjugated with cow and camel milks can be used as complementary antimicrobial agents against pathogenic bacterial strains.

The current study was designed to evaluate the in vivo fasciolicidal activity of Moringa (M.) ole... more The current study was designed to evaluate the in vivo fasciolicidal activity of Moringa (M.) oleifera leaf aqueous extract oral administration as well as its antibacterial activity against Clostridium (C.) novyi in sheep naturally co-infected with fascioliasis and C. novyi. Sheep naturally infected with fascioliasis were divided into 3 groups, heavily infected treated group, lightly infected treated group and mixed infection control (non-treated) group. Treatment groups were orally administered M. oleifera leaves aqueous extract at a dose of 150 mg/kg every 48 h for 21 days. Animal body weights, fecal egg count, serum levels of anti-Fasciola IgG, cytokines (IL-2, IL-17, IL-10), and bacterial count of C. novyi were evaluated. The results showed that treatment with M. oleifera improved the body weight gain and decreased fecal egg count in lightly and heavily infected groups compared to the nontreated group with 100% reduction in egg count in lightly infected sheep. Furthermore, the treatment with M. oleifera significantly reduced the serum levels of IgG, IL-2, and IL-17. Interestingly, elevated levels of IL-10 were recorded in both heavily and lightly infected sheep. The treatment with Moringa extract significantly decreased the fecal bacterial count of C. novyi in both heavily and lightly infected groups. In conclusion, this study highlights the potential beneficial effects of M. oleifera leaf against Fasciola (F.) gigantica and C. novyi.

LSDV is a double-stranded DNA virus (Onyejekwe et al., 2019). It is a member of the genus Capripoxvirus of Poxviridae with the size of its genome 151-kbp (Bhanuprakash et al., 2006). LSDV is a transboundary high-impact cattle disease characterized by fever, nodular formation, a rapid eruption of skin nodules, enlarged superficial lymph node, generalized lymphadenitis, and edema with great economic losses (Abera et al., 2015, Şevik et al., 2016; Rouby et al., 2019). It is usually more prevalent during the wet summer and au-research Article Abstract | Background: Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is a contagious disease caused by the Lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) which belongs to the genus Capripoxvirus of the family Poxviridae. Cattle are the only animal species affected, with high morbidity and mortality rate in the young. LSD causes economic losses, abortions in females, and sterility in males. Nanoparticles are one of the novel strategies that adopted in the treatment of diseases in the last few years owing to their pioneering and functional properties. Aim: This study aimed to treat the clinically infected cattle with LSDV using Propolis-Alginate nanoparticles (Propolis-ALg NPs) through different routes such as eye drop, oral route and topical spray. Materials and methods: The Propolis-ALg NPs were characterized through Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), in-vitro cytotoxicity, and hemolysis assays. The animal study was carried out during the outbreak of LSD in July 2018 at Beni-suef Governorate, Egypt. 35 infected cows with different ages were used in the present study. The animals were divided into two groups; group A (20 animals) and group B(15 animals). Animals in group A were treated with Propolis-ALg NPs and animals in group B were treated with tetracycline antibiotics. Confirmation of the isolated LSDV was done by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using universal primers. results: The Propolis-ALg NPs showed spherical morphology with small particle sizes. The thermal analysis revealed the successful encapsulation of the propolis within the ALg NPs. Also, the in-vitro cytotoxicity study confirmed the safety of the Propolis-ALg NPs. In addition to that, the prepared nanoparticles were found to be non-toxic when they come in contact with blood. On the other hand, the clinically infected cattle with LSDV which treated with the Propolis-ALg NPs revealed a 100 % recovery. While, the animals treated with the tetracycline showed only 13.3% recovery. conclusion: Therefore, the Propolis-ALg NPs were shown to be a potential candidate in the therapy against LSDV infections.

Different root pruning treatments (0.0, 30, 60 and 90 cm) from the trunk of mother plants during bud break and full bloom stages and Medium strength (Full, one- half and one-fourth) were tested. Data indicated that bud break stage surpassed full bloom stage in all parameters under study (shoot length, number of node, number of branch, explants development, fresh weight, number of leaves and greening). Moreover, using root pruning treatments (30 cm) was better than (0.0, 60 and 90 cm). Also, one- half treatment enhanced the proliferation percentage and shoot number compared with the other treatments.

Novel Therapeutic Modality Employing Apitherapy for Controlling of Multiple Sclerosis

Objective: Study the effect of bee sting therapy (Apitherapy) in the treatment of Multiple Sclero... more Objective: Study the effect of bee sting therapy (Apitherapy) in the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis. Methods: Fifty patients with MS, their ages ranged between 26-71 years, were subjected to complete clinical and neurological history and examination to confirm the diagnosis. All cases were under their regular treatment they were divided into two main groups, Group I received honey, pollen, royal jelly and Propolis and were treated with acupuncture 3 times weekly, for 12 months, in addition to their medical treatment, while group II remains on their ordinary medical treatment only. Acupuncture was done by bee stings for regulating the immune system. Results: Results revealed that 4 patients showed some improvement regarding their defects in gait, bowel control, constipation and urination, while 12 cases, showed some mild improvement in their movement in bed, and better improvement in bed sores, sensation, and better motor power, only two cases of them were able to stand for a few minutes with support. Interleukin (IL) 1β, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα, and IL-6 were detected. The level of TNF-α was significantly elevated in patients in Group II, while IL-1β was reduced in Group II than Group I and no significant differences were found for IL-6 between the 2 groups. The mean values of IgE level in both groups of M.S. Patients were low, but with no statistical significance, while by the end of the study there were an elevation in the levels of IgE for both groups, which was statistically significant. Conclusion: Although Apitherapy is not a curable therapy in MS, but it can be used to minimize the clinical symptoms of MS, and can be included among programs of MS therapy.

The purpose of this study was to provide more light on the effect of Qatada (Acacia hamulosa) hon... more The purpose of this study was to provide more light on the effect of Qatada (Acacia hamulosa) honey from Saudi Arabia as a dressing on pilonidal sinus wound healing, antibacterial activity, and cytokine levels. The results revealed that the pH of 3.56 of tested honey, where glucose was 378 mmol/l also the specific gravity was 1.435, while contents of total phenolic and flavonoid and DPPH activity (32.15 mg GAE/100 g honey), (54.27 mg RE/100 g honey) and (127.83 mg/ml) respectively. The mean duration of pilonidal sinus wounds to be ready for surgical closure was 43.5 days in the control (standard dressing) group where the honey dressing group was 28.5 days. Less pain, edema, and foul-smelling discharge were expressed in the honey group if compared with the standard dressing group. The administration of coriander honey in a dose of (500 mg/kg/mouse) to EAC bearing mice causes decrease in ascitic fluid volume and viable tumor cell count and increases in nonviable tumor cell count. Administration of coriander honey to EAC bearing mice increases the life span of EAC bearing mice. The administration of coriander honey reduces the level of both lipid peroxidation and superoxide dismutase (SOD) while it increases the level of glutathione (GSH) in comparison to EAC control group and shifting them back to near the normal values. These results suggest the possibility of using coriander honey as an effective antioxidant to prevent or interrupt the process of cancer progression.

Singapore reported its first locally acquired human Plasmodium knowlesi infection in 2007, involv... more Singapore reported its first locally acquired human Plasmodium knowlesi infection in 2007, involving a soldier who had undergone training in a forested area where long-tailed macaques are frequently seen. Comprehensive disease surveillance and monitoring system that was set up after the initial case detected four additional human P. knowlesi cases in 2007 and one in 2008. All involved military personnel who had undergone training in the forested area, and none had traveled out of Singapore 1 month before the onset of symptoms. Screening for malaria parasites on blood obtained from long-tailed macaques revealed that wild monkeys (n ¼ 3) caught from the forested area were infected with P. knowlesi, whereas peri-domestic monkeys (n ¼ 10) caught from a nature reserve park were not infected with any malaria parasites. Phylogenetic analysis of the nonrepeat region of the P. knowlesi csp genes showed that the sequences obtained from the human cases were not distinct from those obtained from wild monkeys. Further, certain genotypes were shared between samples from humans and macaques. Our findings provide evidence that long-tailed macaques are the natural hosts of P. knowlesi in Singapore and the human cases acquired their infection in the same vicinity where these monkeys are found. Further, the risk of acquiring P. knowlesi infection among the general population of Singapore is small as evident from the absence of P. knowlesi in peri-domestic monkeys.

In this study, the potential antimicrobial activity of aqueous nanoparticles conjugated with cow milk and camel milk were investigated against six bacterial strains of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The Gram-positive bacteria were represented by Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) and Streptococcus pyogenes while the Gram-negative bacteria were represented by Klebsiella pneumonia (ATCC 27736), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853) Salmonella typhi (ATCC 19430) and Escherichia coli (ATCC 35218). The results indicated that aqueous silver nanoparticles conjugated with cow and camel milks were effective antibacterial agents against the tested pathogenic bacterial strains. But the aqueous silver nanoparticles conjugated with camel milk are more effective than its counterpart with cow milk. The results indicated that aqueous silver nanoparticles conjugated with cow and camel milks can be used as complementary antimicrobial agents against pathogenic bacterial strains.

The current study was designed to evaluate the in vivo fasciolicidal activity of Moringa (M.) ole... more The current study was designed to evaluate the in vivo fasciolicidal activity of Moringa (M.) oleifera leaf aqueous extract oral administration as well as its antibacterial activity against Clostridium (C.) novyi in sheep naturally co-infected with fascioliasis and C. novyi. Sheep naturally infected with fascioliasis were divided into 3 groups, heavily infected treated group, lightly infected treated group and mixed infection control (non-treated) group. Treatment groups were orally administered M. oleifera leaves aqueous extract at a dose of 150 mg/kg every 48 h for 21 days. Animal body weights, fecal egg count, serum levels of anti-Fasciola IgG, cytokines (IL-2, IL-17, IL-10), and bacterial count of C. novyi were evaluated. The results showed that treatment with M. oleifera improved the body weight gain and decreased fecal egg count in lightly and heavily infected groups compared to the nontreated group with 100% reduction in egg count in lightly infected sheep. Furthermore, the treatment with M. oleifera significantly reduced the serum levels of IgG, IL-2, and IL-17. Interestingly, elevated levels of IL-10 were recorded in both heavily and lightly infected sheep. The treatment with Moringa extract significantly decreased the fecal bacterial count of C. novyi in both heavily and lightly infected groups. In conclusion, this study highlights the potential beneficial effects of M. oleifera leaf against Fasciola (F.) gigantica and C. novyi.

LSDV is a double-stranded DNA virus (Onyejekwe et al., 2019). It is a member of the genus Capripoxvirus of Poxviridae with the size of its genome 151-kbp (Bhanuprakash et al., 2006). LSDV is a transboundary high-impact cattle disease characterized by fever, nodular formation, a rapid eruption of skin nodules, enlarged superficial lymph node, generalized lymphadenitis, and edema with great economic losses (Abera et al., 2015, Şevik et al., 2016; Rouby et al., 2019). Cattle are the only animal species affected, with high morbidity and mortality rate in the young. LSD causes economic losses, abortions in females, and sterility in males. Nanoparticles are one of the novel strategies that adopted in the treatment of diseases in the last few years owing to their pioneering and functional properties. Aim: This study aimed to treat the clinically infected cattle with LSDV using Propolis-Alginate nanoparticles (Propolis-ALg NPs) through different routes such as eye drop, oral route and topical spray. Materials and methods: The Propolis-ALg NPs were characterized through Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), in-vitro cytotoxicity, and hemolysis assays. The animal study was carried out during the outbreak of LSD in July 2018 at Beni-suef Governorate, Egypt. 35 infected cows with different ages were used in the present study. The animals were divided into two groups; group A (20 animals) and group B(15 animals). Animals in group A were treated with Propolis-ALg NPs and animals in group B were treated with tetracycline antibiotics. Confirmation of the isolated LSDV was done by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using universal primers. results: The Propolis-ALg NPs showed spherical morphology with small particle sizes. The thermal analysis revealed the successful encapsulation of the propolis within the ALg NPs. Also, the in-vitro cytotoxicity study confirmed the safety of the Propolis-ALg NPs. In addition to that, the prepared nanoparticles were found to be non-toxic when they come in contact with blood. On the other hand, the clinically infected cattle with LSDV which treated with the Propolis-ALg NPs revealed a 100 % recovery. While, the animals treated with the tetracycline showed only 13.3% recovery. conclusion: Therefore, the Propolis-ALg NPs were shown to be a potential candidate in the therapy against LSDV infections.

Different root pruning treatments (0.0, 30, 60 and 90 cm) from the trunk of mother plants during bud break and full bloom stages and Medium strength (Full, one- half and one-fourth) were tested. Data indicated that bud break stage surpassed full bloom stage in all parameters under study (shoot length, number of node, number of branch, explants development, fresh weight, number of leaves and greening). Moreover, using root pruning treatments (30 cm) was better than (0.0, 60 and 90 cm). Also, one- half treatment enhanced the proliferation percentage and shoot number compared with the other treatments.

Novel Therapeutic Modality Employing Apitherapy for Controlling of Multiple Sclerosis

Methods: Fifty patients with MS, their ages ranged between 26-71 years, were subjected to complete clinical and neurological history and examination to confirm the diagnosis. All cases were under their regular treatment they were divided into two main groups, Group I received honey, pollen, royal jelly and Propolis and were treated with acupuncture 3 times weekly, for 12 months, in addition to their medical treatment, while group II remains on their ordinary medical treatment only. Acupuncture was done by bee stings for regulating the immune system. Results: Results revealed that 4 patients showed some improvement regarding their defects in gait, bowel control, constipation and urination, while 12 cases, showed some mild improvement in their movement in bed, and better improvement in bed sores, sensation, and better motor power, only two cases of them were able to stand for a few minutes with support. Interleukin (IL) 1β, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα, and IL-6 were detected. The level of TNF-α was significantly elevated in patients in Group II, while IL-1β was reduced in Group II than Group I and no significant differences were found for IL-6 between the 2 groups. The mean values of IgE level in both groups of M.S. Patients were low, but with no statistical significance, while by the end of the study there were an elevation in the levels of IgE for both groups, which was statistically significant. Conclusion: Although Apitherapy is not a curable therapy in MS, but it can be used to minimize the clinical symptoms of MS, and can be included among programs of MS therapy.
