Translation quality improvement

Hello, Where can we correct the source of the Occitan version of this page? There are many errors on it, including parts of the text in catalan and other using words that look Occitan but actually do not exist in our language. Best regards Jfblanc (talk) 12:11, 5 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Jfblanc: Here: all messages of the main page in Occitan. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 01:50, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Q124000000 entry not displayed on the main page

Why is the entry not displayed on the main page? The family name fits so well with the Christmas holidays ;-) Could someone please have a look at it? Thank you! Quick-O-Mat (talk) 17:06, 25 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What makes the number special at this scale? Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 23:21, 25 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There is so little new to report that a mention in connection with the family name "Tannemann" at Christmas can't be wrong. --Quick-O-Mat (talk) 23:26, 25 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You forget to mention it’s your own created item. The number is insignificant, we are not here for personal serotonin releases. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 19:39, 26 December 2023
124000000 is a round number and just as much a milestone as 120000000 or 125000000. I see no problem in mentioning this in view of the few news items, on the contrary, it is more of an incentive to work towards the next milestone. In addition, the entry was not created by a bot and serves as a nice example of a properly completed data record for a family name. The entry with the number Q123456789 (T:294) has been in the news since 15 November 2023, what do the rules say about it? As I said, there are so few milestones that the occasional news item is more likely to liven up the main page than harm anyone. I'm curious to see if the statement "Feel free to add to this list." is true. --Quick-O-Mat (talk) 19:54, 26 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The number Q123456789 is significant, if we keep reporting EVERY round number there is a no room for actual news left. On this scale we should not report on every million. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 12:12, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The entry Q123456789 is nothing special, especially as it was also deleted. You could also say that the entry Q124000000 is curious because it contains the surname "Tannemann" at Christmas, which doesn't happen every day. The record Q123000000 was created on 10 October 2023, so I don't see any danger here that there might not be enough space for the few new messages that are posted in the news. In a period of three months, just 6 messages do not flood the space for new messages. The record Q120000000 is even 6 months old and was only a redirect to Q5999113, which I also merged. Posting a new message a little more frequently would do the main page some good. --Quick-O-Mat (talk) 12:50, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Item numbers are not interesting news. If you want number/based news, focusing on growth in editors would be much better.
Apart from that news over new policy/features/gadgets would be better than item numbers. ChristianKl14:08, 28 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It looks to be displaying now. -wd-Ryan (Talk/Edits) 23:36, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The news section on the main page is mostly only used to report when some IDs reach a particular number. That is not useful (or particularly interesting) to someone wanting to know what is happening at Wikidata.

I've tried to encourage people to add more newsworthy things to the news section by adding things like events myself, and by pointing out to WMDE that they have not added upcoming events to the main page, but it hasn't helped. The Lexicodays 2024 event was never announced there, there's no mention of the office hours later today nor the new EntitySchema datatype.

If you actually want news about Wikidata, you have to read the weekly summaries, but those are only linked at the very end of the page and there's no link to the most recent one.

To make it easier for people to find the most recent news and avoid issues with the main page not being updated, I therefore propose that we should replace the manually updated news section with an automatically generated list of links to the most recent weekly summaries.

What about instead integrating it at Wikidata:News which is linked from that section in bold? Prototyperspective (talk) 12:09, 2 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Current highlight lexemes

can we have current highlights also for lexemes? –Shisma (talk) 12:28, 2 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Mark updates for translation

@Mohammed Abdulai (WMDE): I see you are a translation administrator, so you can mark the changes for translation. --Mormegil (talk) 15:25, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

PS. Oh! It wasn’t my fault to post to Wikidata talk:Main Page instead of the intended Wikidata talk:News – the latter is a redirect here! Maybe User:WaitingForConnection had a point to redirect it in 2012, but maybe we should remove the redirect now? --Mormegil (talk) 15:50, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
