[edit]A lot of organizations, clans, families, individuals have their own tartan. Tartans can be done the same way how coat of arms and flags are encoded into Wikidata. — JhowieNitnek 11:22, 14 April 2024 (UTC)

- Comment many clans have multiple "official" tartans (dress, hunting, ancient, etc.) I would suggest removing the single value constraint and recommend using a qualifier "object has role" for these. — PKM (talk) 21:50, 15 April 2024 (UTC)
- Agree, especially considering the existence of prominent but dubious sources like the Vestiarium Scoticum (Q3556383) whose corresponding statements should be included but perhaps using reason for deprecated rank (P2241) or statement disputed by (P1310) as qualifier. — Arlo Barnes (talk) 20:51, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
Opposeto current description given that it doesn't tell me what a tartan happens to be. — ChristianKl ❪✉❫ 20:46, 17 April 2024 (UTC)
- Could you elaborate on why you oppose? Then I can adapt my proposal to be better. — Jhowie Nitnek 20:26, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
- I don't know what a tartan is. I think that's true for more people then just me. I don't think that anyone who reads "subject's tartan" who didn't know what a tartan is will learn about what a tartan is by reading it. — ChristianKl ❪✉❫ 23:07, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
- A tartan is Scottish cloth pattern, said to represent a clan, region, or other group of people often worn as a kilt. — Jhowie Nitnek 13:25, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
- What about analogous Maasai patterns? Would they be included in this proposal or need a separate one? — Arlo Barnes (talk) 20:51, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
- @JhowieNitnek:, could you please response comments above. Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 06:44, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
- Sorry I am not familiar with them. Could you elaborate please? Jhowie Nitnek 07:54, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Arlo Barnes:, could you please elaborate for @JhowieNitnek:. Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 17:52, 30 April 2024 (UTC)
- Sure, I'm referring to the cloth called shúkà. It's a kind of tartan, with a variety of patterns that are associated with regions. Arlo Barnes (talk) 21:01, 30 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Arlo Barnes I think they shouldn't be in this proposal as tartan is specific to Scotland even though they have been adopted by a lot of cultures around the world (they all still register in the Scottish Register of Tartans). Even though they look similar they are different. Jhowie Nitnek 06:21, 8 May 2024 (UTC)
