Motivation
[edit]Currently, chapter (P792) and section, verse, paragraph, or clause (P958) are being used for this purpose, making biblical references strange-looking or unintelligible when transcluded. References to biblical chapter and verse should be formatted as "4:32". The best solution seems to be a separate property with a single text string. This also makes it possible and easy to add complex, precise references (see examples). Förbätterlig (talk) 11:16, 14 November 2022 (UTC)
Discussion
[edit]- Oppose Per Bible citation (Q4427525) there are numerous common techniques for stylizing bible references. It would be better to split section, verse, paragraph, or clause (P958) into distinct sub-properties for referring to a range of sections/verses/paragraphs so that whatever system is presenting the data can style however it chooses (i18n considerations too). Perhaps "starting section/verse/paragraph" and "ending section/verse/paragraph" as two new string properties? As many or most chapters of the bible have Wikidata items I suggest also proposing a new property of an item datatype to complement chapter (P792). Examples to use in new property proposals could include Lord's Prayer (Q23393) and Parable of the talents or minas (Q1267763) but these properties would have universal appeal so I recommend listing other examples outside of the bible. --Dhx1 (talk) 13:44, 14 November 2022 (UTC)
- Support I think Dhx1's suggestions sound good and I hope they are implemented eventually! I look forward to a continued discussion. Förbätterlig (talk) 10:36, 15 November 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose present in work (P1441) + section, verse, paragraph, or clause (P958) should be used for this. /ℇsquilo 08:08, 23 November 2022 (UTC)
