Motivation
Together with Nomen ad hoc, we believe P3188 (P3188) should be split into a handful of properties so that every one is managed more efficiently. The IDs will be shorter – and will thus look much more like actual IDs. And then we'll be able to have tighter constraints and eventually a better use. Take this new Wikidata property related to literature (Q29561722), for instance. We'll now be able to call it very easily through Template:Literature links (Q54933000) and this specific template only. Wikidata:Project chat has been consulted and our suggestion got no opposition. Discussion
- Strong support, fully agree with the motivation. Nomen ad hoc (talk) 11:28, 24 July 2018 (UTC).
- Support David (talk) 15:28, 24 July 2018 (UTC)
- Oppose Creation of this property until there is a consensus to deprecate the exiting property and crate the full set of more-specific identifiers (which I would support). Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:16, 25 July 2018 (UTC)
- @Pigsonthewing: Here's the discussion. Thierry Caro (talk) 12:54, 25 July 2018 (UTC)
- I've not started the deletion process of P3188 (P3188) just because I want to be sure our service won't be discontinued. I believe it is reasonable to have the newer properties first and then proceed to erase the older one, not the other way round, for the latter option would disrupt our offer. That said, maybe it wasn't clear enough so let me try to clarify this for anyone who may wonder. Yes, the old property will be deleted once all the new ones are created and if you do support this proposal you should be aware of that future deletion and OK with it. In simple terms, we are starting afresh with more focused properties. Thierry Caro (talk) 14:59, 25 July 2018 (UTC)
- Pigsonthewing, what do you think about this modus operandi? Nomen ad hoc (talk) 10:55, 30 July 2018 (UTC).
- I understood that to be the approach; hence my objection and comment. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:38, 30 July 2018 (UTC)

- @Pigsonthewing: Here's the discussion. Thierry Caro (talk) 12:54, 25 July 2018 (UTC)
- Comment I dont see the need and why the splitting would be more "efficient"? For instance, with
{{Complex constraint}}
you could easily have "tighter constraints". At the very least, we need more discussions than 5 lines on the Project chat (where July is probably not the best month to get reviews). Cdlt, VIGNERON (talk) 12:44, 29 July 2018 (UTC) - Oppose I don't see any advantage of splitting P3188 (P3188)
- IDs will be shorter: disk space is nowadays almost unlimited, URL length is almost unlimited, humans don't need to remember IDs. So why are shorter IDs desired?
- will look much more like actual IDs: How does an actual ID look like? More and more databases are switching to Universally Unique Identifier (Q195284), i.e. a 128-bit number. For me that is the "typical look" of an ID.
- tighter constraints: use complex constraints
- eventually a better use: you could already now use P3188 (P3188) in Template:Literature links (Q54933000). Or is there a reason that in fr:Albert_Einstein#Liens_externes no link to nobelprize.org should be set?
- --Pasleim (talk) 16:16, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
- @Pasleim: for the last part, there is a catch: P3188 (P3188) is for all Nobel Prize (Q7191) but Template:Literature links (Q54933000) would only be for Nobel Prize in Literature (Q37922). I think it's should be simple in Lua to filter them (you just have to look at the beginning of the value of the id) but I don't Lua enough to code this. - Comment. On hold as a discussion is ongoing on Wikidata:Properties for deletion. Thierry Caro (talk) 23:10, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
- Comment @Thierry Caro, Pigsonthewing, Pasleim, VIGNERON: FYI we have set up a Federated search with http://data.nobelprize.org/sparql/ see T200668 and tweet . Looks like we need another Nobel property for exact match i.e. to state that Harry Martinson (Q132695) is an exact match with data.nobelprize.org/page/laureate/650 - Salgo60 (talk) 14:38, 14 August 2018 (UTC)
- Comment The Nobel Prize web has been redesigned I sent in some questions to https://www.nobelprize.org/contact see T203915 - Salgo60 (talk) 18:32, 9 September 2018 (UTC)
- Comment I removed "on hold" as there is no consensus for creation and the deletion doesn't seem to go through. --- Jura 20:57, 5 November 2018 (UTC)
