Motivation
[edit]Idaho Species (Q107171665) is "the most comprehensive repository for site-specific data on the gem state's fish, wildlife, and plant diversity" (https://idfg.idaho.gov/species/). This database is maintained by the Idaho Fish and Wildlife Information System under the stewardship of the Wildlife Diversity Program at Idaho Fish and Game. This property will provide links to authoritative information about Idaho species. UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 00:28, 10 June 2021 (UTC)

- @UWashPrincipalCataloger: Please change the name of the property. The dataset contains ids for other ranks too (family, genus, subspecies, variety). --Succu (talk) 17:35, 10 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Succu: The name of the database/website is "Idaho Species", so this is an ID for any taxon found in "Idaho Species." In this case the word in the title "Species" is not limiting the property to the species level. The property name means that it is an ID for any entity on the site "Idaho Species." Also this particular numerical ID applies only to species, varieties, and perhaps subspecies. The URL for higher taxa is completely different and this ID wouldn't cover them. For example, the URL for Noctuidae is https://idfg.idaho.gov/species/taxa/family/Animalia/Arthropoda/Insecta/Lepidoptera/Noctuidae. UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 17:53, 10 June 2021 (UTC)
- Then at least your description is incorrect: „identifier for an animal, plant, or fungal species in the Idaho Species database and website“. A genus example Cygnus, a family example Phallaceae. --Succu (talk) 18:17, 10 June 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for the examples of genera and families using the numeric ID. I'm not sure how you got to those, but now that you've shown me them, I'll revise the description. UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 18:35, 10 June 2021 (UTC)
- The dataset contains ids for taxa not present in Idaho. Totally more than 65,000. An id for a taxon is not allways unique: sockeye salmon (Q44064) - 1867123, 16015 (= Kokanee salmon (Q11330205)) or rainbow trout (Q187986) - 19083, 1867122 (=Steelhead trout (Q64437771)). Regards --Succu (talk) 18:58, 10 June 2021 (UTC)
- I'm curious how you were able to view the entire dataset. It isn't very obvious from looking at the Idaho Species home page. UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 20:11, 10 June 2021 (UTC)
- Start at Animals/Plants/Fungus. Choose -any- for "In Idaho?" and go to the last page With 50 entries per page you get the number of ids. Add the result for the three kingdoms → more than 65,000 ids. --Succu (talk) 20:38, 10 June 2021 (UTC)

[edit]@UWashPrincipalCataloger, Jala360, Zidmgmt, Emwille, imandag, Clements.UWLib:: Looks like the datasource is no longer available. --Succu (talk) 22:08, 20 January 2023 (UTC) PS: Sorry @Helianthus74: missed you. --Succu (talk) 22:13, 20 January 2023 (UTC)
- I am able to access the database right now. Am I missing your meaning when you say the datasource is no longer available? --Crystal Yragui, University of Washington Libraries (talk) 20:16, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Crystal Yragui, University of Washington Libraries: Looks like this was a temporary misfunction. --Succu (talk) 21:49, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
