it's funny because my job involves a lot of using a box cutter, so you'd think that's the thing I'd accidentally hurt myself with the most

but nooo no no no. the box cutter is my colleague, my ally, my friend. you know what is truly bloodthirsty in a print & signage shop? literally Anything Else that's able to cut but not supposed to. cardboard, sheets of plastic, the humble paper of course, corrugated polypropylene, aluminum composite sheets - i nicked myself on a sheet of magnetic material today?? it bled. kinda profusely.

basically:

  • box cutter: a trusty companion, might hurt you if you handle it wrong, but that's understandable
  • stuff you use the box cutter on: they know you as their enemy. they know the rules of this life: kill, or be killed. they know what they have to do.

ellen bass and laura davis, the courage to heal, harper collins, 1988

["Emotionally, for me, and I'm not defending this, letting go of the damage would mean abandoning that eleven-year-old girl who's still alive in me, who nobody was there for, who wasn't listened to. If I get better, if the bruise heals, then there's going to be no sign of it, and it'll be as if she never got heard. And that would be an incredible disloyalty, a betrayal of that little girl.

So I'm trying to get myself healed and over the symptoms of that damage without denying that it happened. This is the intellectual "me" talking. This is not the eleven-year-old girl. She doesn't want to let go. It's an emotional feeling. And emotions are very powerful. You can have all the right intellectual thoughts and emotionally you can be very childlike. And the fearful child in me doesn't want to be forgotten. So I have to reassure her that my getting better doesn't mean I'm abandoning her or denying her pain."]

victor j. seidler, from unreasonable men: masculinity and social theory, 1994

["It can be difficult for men to empathise with the situations of others, if they are constantly reassuring themselves that they would never get into the situation in the first place or if they are constantly focussed on giving solutions because they assume that this is what is expected of them. It can be hard to listen, even to our partners for instance, without feeling that we are somehow being accused or being held responsible for the miserable day they have had. It might be that they just want to be listened to so that they can feel that their experience is being validated. But as man it can be hard to recognise this, thinking that they must want to get rid of those feelings, so that they must really want some solution to their plight from us."]

Iceland - Heimaey Island (2) (3) (4) by Mike Fitzpatrick

Via Flickr:

(1) A large colony of Atlantic Puffins breed on the grassy slopes above the sea cliffs on the Storhofdi peninsula at the south end of Heimaey Island. A small hut located halfway up the slope on the left side of the photo is a puffin viewing stand, where we will have an opportunity to see the birds up close. On gray cloudy days such as this, the birds are more likely to remain on shore rather than spend the day out at sea feeding, thus giving us the opportunity to see them in great numbers.

fatphobia is so wild. the fact that gaining weight on HRT is always framed as a "negative potential side effect" when it's like a genuinely desirable effect. I feel like half the shit people say about HRT is like "uh oh, you might experience everything you want and get hotter" like heaven forbid, lmao

Transvestitenschein (transvestite pass). Courtesy of the Magnus-Hirschfeld-Gesellschaft. Following advice from Hirschfeld, Berlin police officials issued this Transvestitenschein (transvestite pass) to Eva Katter (who called himself Gert and was a carpenter) on 6 December 1928. The card reads: “The worker Eva Katter, born on 14 March 1910, and residing in Britz at Muthesisushof 8, is known here as someone who wears male clothing. Strewe, Police Commissioner.” Katter was a patient at the Institute for Sexual Science and was occasionally presented to visitors as a “demonstration case” (medical specimen). While living in the former German Democratic Republic, he was one of the few institute patients to establish contact with the Magnus Hirschfeld Society. In donating his records, Katter reclaimed his history and made it part of the institute’s archive. He died in 1995.
