NASCAR calls for smaller fuel cells in Las Vegas race.

NASCAR announced Sunday that 13-gallon fuel cells will be used for this season's Nextel Cup and Busch series races at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

"After discussing it with Goodyear we feel like we have the potential for some of the same issues we had at the Charlotte race last year," said Robin Pemberton, vice president of NASCAR competition. "So we have decided to go to the 13-gallon fuel cell at Vegas."

The smaller fuel cells were used last year for both races at Lowe's Motor Speedway at Charlotte because of concerns about tires on that track's new pavement. High speeds and several apparently tire-related crashes at a Nextel Cup test at the newly configured 1.5-mile track raised concerns about the larger cells.
