 Born- 4th century

Chanakya
 Author of

EARLY LIFE
 Kautilya known as the
father of Indian political
thought.
 Kautilya’s name has got
prominent place amongst
the ancient Indian political
thinkers.
 Most of the details of the
life of Kautilya are
uncertain and shrouded in
myth and legend
 Ancient Indian tradition
describes him as a native
of Taxila. Taxila.
 Kautilya belongs to
Magadha state (present
south Bihar).
 Born to a Brahmin family
of Northern Indian.
 He studied at one of the
world’s oldest university,
Takshasila University.
 Kautilya was a professor
of political science and
economics at the
University of Taxila
 He was called as a
political realist as his
ideas were based on
experience and
considerations.
 He was also well versed
with the Vedas and the
Vedic literature.
 He joined Chandragupta
Maurya’s empire , after
a brief stint with the Chandragupta Maurya
previous Nanda dynasty.
 Kautilya recognized brave qualities of
Chandragupta and took Chandragupta to
Taxila.
 With his intelligence and the strength of
Chandragupta he defeated Nanda Kings
and made Chandragupta the King and
worked as the Prime Minister
 Kautilya was also called as Chanakya,
Vishnugupta, Pakshila, Vatsayana,
kautya, Drumila, Swarni and Angula
WORK [Arthashastra]
 It was composed by
Kautilya in 1st century
AD.
 The political thoughts of
Kautilya are summarized
in a book he wrote known
as the Arthashastra
 It is in the form of
dialogues.
 It relatively more
practical than
Dharmashastra
 It is divided into 15
adhikaranas(parts) and 180
prakaranas (chapters) in
prose and 180 verse (topics)
in Sanskrit Kautilya’s
Arthashastra resembled
Aristotle’s Politics.
 It contains detailed
information about specific
topics, such as diplomacy,
war, recommendations on
law, prisons, taxation,
fortification, coinage,
manufacturing trade
administration and spy.
Objectives of
Arthashastra
 To discover the way through which a
ruler is able to protect his domain.
 To discover the ways through which he is

able to add new territories to his domain.


These are the two main objectives of
Arthashastra. Thus Arthashastra view as
the science of state craft of politics and
administration.
 It is more of practical treatise concerned
with the art of administration.
 It deals with the seven elements of the
state.

The Arthashastra text embraces,


sociology, Economics, politics,
though major portion is devoted to
the problems of administration.
It is the only treaty that has
preserved the old political ideas.
