We will be looking at data in this unit
But what does data mean?
Red Velvet Chocolate Rainbow Layer Strawberry Shortcake Key Lime Pie
In your groups, design your menu.
Draw 3 – 6 types of cake, name them and set a price
Leave space for a tally chart under each one
Two of you will be shopkeepers, and two of you will
be customers
Customers, go around the room, looking at other
menus
Choose which cakes you would like to eat
Shopkeepers, record their orders… as long as they
are sensible
Were your guesses of how many of each type of
cake right? It’s OK if they were wrong
This data that we have collected is very important
for your cake business.
Will you always sell the same amount of cakes?
No!
But now you have some numbers that can help you
plan better.
If you keep recording sales each day, you will have
more and more data
In your little shop, it is easy to keep track of how
many cakes you sell each day
The very first computer bought by a business was
sold to a company that sold hundreds of different
cakes.
Not hundreds of pieces of cake, or even hundreds of
cakes, but hundreds of types of cakes.
So many cakes!
They used a computer to collect, compare and check
what sort of cakes were most popular, and to help
plan how many of each type of cake they should
make, and where to send them.
Now, nearly every company uses a computer for
many things to help them organize, prepare and
communicate.
