Unit 5: Data Café

Learning Intention
We are learning to organize data

Success Criteria
I can record data in a tally sheet
I can make decisions based on the data I have
Identify problems that can be solved through the
collection and interpretation of data.
We will be looking at data in this unit
But what does data mean?

Things we need to know

Bar charts in mathematics and science

Numbers and information

We are going to gather some data today.
A café needs to work out how many of each type of
cake to have ready for the next day
In groups of 4, you will design the menu for a cake
shop. You need about 3-6 different types of cakes
If you don’t make enough of a popular type, you will
sell out – but if you had more, you could make more
money
If you make too many of a less popular cake, you will
waste food and lose money. Be careful!
In your group, decide how many types of cake you
will have.
Draw them, and decide on a price for each slice
If your prices are too high, no one will buy them
If your prices are too low, you won’t make enough
money to make more cakes
Plan how many of each cake to make (it’s OK if this is
wrong, have a guess and see)
Here are some cakes to give you an idea…
Baked Alaska Black Forest Banoffee Pie Cheesecake Lemon Meringue Pavlova

Red Velvet Chocolate Rainbow Layer Strawberry Shortcake Key Lime Pie
In your groups, design your menu.
Draw 3 – 6 types of cake, name them and set a price
Leave space for a tally chart under each one
Two of you will be shopkeepers, and two of you will
be customers
Customers, go around the room, looking at other
menus
Choose which cakes you would like to eat
Shopkeepers, record their orders… as long as they
are sensible
Were your guesses of how many of each type of
cake right? It’s OK if they were wrong
This data that we have collected is very important
for your cake business.
Will you always sell the same amount of cakes?
No!
But now you have some numbers that can help you
plan better.
If you keep recording sales each day, you will have
more and more data
In your little shop, it is easy to keep track of how
many cakes you sell each day
The very first computer bought by a business was
sold to a company that sold hundreds of different
cakes.
Not hundreds of pieces of cake, or even hundreds of
cakes, but hundreds of types of cakes.
So many cakes!
They used a computer to collect, compare and check
what sort of cakes were most popular, and to help
plan how many of each type of cake they should
make, and where to send them.
Now, nearly every company uses a computer for
many things to help them organize, prepare and
communicate.
