PART 1 Excel Practice
RECAP: WEEK 1
What is the equations Total Revenue?

Profit = Total Revenue - Total costs

TOTAL REVENUE = PRICE x QUANTITY

Formulas in Excel - Multiplication

How would we calculate the sales

amount (or revenue) for the first order?
TOTAL REVENUE = PRICE x QUANTITY
Formulas in Excel - Multiplication

To do that in Excel, we use the following

formula
Cells
=E2*F3

Formulas on
Excel start with Symbol for Repeat this for
= multiplication the next order.
Cell G3
Shortcuts in Excel

To duplicate the same formula on

different rows, you can use the fill handle

A fill handle is a tool in Microsoft Excel

that allows users to quickly copy formulas
or data down a column or across a row.
Formulas in Excel - Multiplication
Formulas in Excel - Addition

We now want to calculate the total of the

Sale amount. What formula could we use
to do this?

=G2+G3+G4+…
Formulas in Excel - Addition

TASK
• Using a formula for addition,
calculate the amount of revenue
Martha makes? Place this
formula in cell G18.

• Repeat this, to calculate the

amount of revenue Douglas
makes? Place this formula in cell
G19.

REMEMBER: Formulas start with =

How much more revenue does

Martha make compared to Douglas?
Think of a formula for subtraction.
HINT: The formula is similar to multiplication.

TASK
Say the Total Cost for this
branch is £287,985. Calculate
the profits earned.
Place this formula in cell G16.
Formulas in Excel – Subtraction
Formulas in Excel – Division

The profit is split between the

three owners of this branch.
How much will each owner
earn?

Place this formula in cell H16.

TASK
Solve the following questions:
TASK
ANSWERS 4. 9+6(x-5)+(3x-8)
1. 6(2x+5)-4(3x-4)-(2x+7)+2x = 9+6x-30+3x-8
=30+16-7 = 9x-29
=39

2. 5(x-4) = 3x-7 5. 2(x+3)-7(x-1)-(4x+15)

5x-20 = 3x-7 =2x+6-7x+7-4x-15
5x-3x = -7+20 =-9x-2
2x = 13
x = 13/2

3. 4(3x-2)-(7x+8)= 2(x-5)
12x-8-7x-8 = 2x-10
12x-7x-2x = -10+8+8
3x = 6
x = 6/3
=2

PART 3 Business Application Practice
Business application question
Last month, Ben sold 17 more sound systems than did the other
salesperson at the store. If the two salespeople sold a total of 101
systems, find the number sold by Ben.
ANSWER Sales by the other
Sales by Ben + = Total
salesperson

(S+17) + S = 101

S + 17 + S = 101

2S + 17 = 101

2S = 101-17

2S = 84
Sales by Ben = 42+17 =59 systems
S=
Business application question
Ben James is studying monthly demand for Chevrolet Impalas in two
different regions of the country. He has 14,200 new Impalas to ship to
the two regions, and he decides to ship 3350 more to the Southeast
region than to the mid-Atlantic Coast region. Find the number to be
shipped to the mid-Atlantic Coast region.
ANSWER Number to mid-Atlantic Number to Southeast
+ = Total
Coast region region

m + (m+3350) = 14200

m + m + 3350 = 14200
Number to mid-Atlantic
=m =5425
Coast region
2m + 3350 = 14200

Number to Southeast 2m = 14200 - 3350

=m+3350 =8775
region
2m = 10850

Business application question
Laurie has £15,000 to invest. She places a portion of the funds in a
savings account and £3000 more than twice this amount in a
retirement account. How much is put into the savings account? How
much is placed in the retirement account?
ANSWER Amount invested in Amount invested in
+ = Total
savings retirement account

m + 3000+2m = 15000

m + 2m + 3000 = 15000
Amount invested in
= £4000
savings
3m + 3000 = 15000

3m = 15000 - 3000
Amount invested in
= 3000+2(4000) =£11000
retirement account
3m = 12000
