1. T-Square – it is
used to draw
horizontal lines
and serves as
guide for triangles.

2. Triangles – it is an
instrument used for
drawing vertical or
inclined lines at a given
angle (30x60 triangles
and 45x45 triangles).

3. Drawing pencil


– mainly used for
drawing. It is one of
the most important
tools in drafting.

4. Erasing shield – this


tool is made up of metal
with irregular holes. It is a
useful tool to protect the
rest of the drawing when
clearing up smudges,
unnecessary pencil lines
and other erasures.

5. Protractor – it is a semi-


circular instrument divided
into 180 equal parts, each
of which is called a degree.
It is used to determine
gradations of the degrees
when measuring arcs,
angles and circles.

6. Triangular scale – this is a tool
generally used when reproducing
a drawing in an enlarged or
reduced form to some regular
proportion. The architect’s scale is
the most commonly used for
general drawing. Its main function
is to reproduce the measurements
of an object in full size, reduced
size, and enlarged size.

7. French curve –a flat
drafting instrument with
curved edges and several
scroll shaped cutouts, used
as a guide in drawing
irregular curves when
constructing graphs or
making technical drawings

sharpener – pencil

and designs are available
in the store for use.

9. Compass – this drawing
instrument is used when
drawing arcs and circles. It

divider. It is composed of
one with the pen leg and
the needle point leg being
held together with a handle.

– a tool used for
dusting and cleaning
drawings with dust
and crumbs.

– a pen used for
inking lines in
drawing. It comes in
different
points/sizes.

flat piece of plastic
with standard symbols
and used as guide for
drawing architectural
images on plans.

13. Ruler – it is
the most popular
type of tool for
measuring sizes and
short distances.

14. Divider - this is a drawing
instrument used when
transferring measurements,
dividing lines and arcs into the
desired number of equal parts.
It can easily transfer accurate
measurements by adjusting
the divider points.

block – serves as

instrument in

board made of soft wood
but with cleats of hard
wood where the drawing
paper is fastened with a
draftsman’s tape.

a basic tool in
drafting use is to give
some height for the
drafting table on the
user when drawing.

3. Drafting
machine - a high
technology
machine for
drawing purposes.
The importance, uses and maintenance
procedure of these tools, materials and
equipment has been discussed in the
previous the Mechanical Drafting
exploratory course. It is presumed
therefore, that you are now ready for a
series of drafting activities.
