What is society?

Society
a group of people involved with each
other through persistent relations, or a
large social grouping sharing the same
geographical or social territory.

- Society and its various aspects provide


support that ensures the development of the
human person.

- Society also provides you opportunities to


further your growth in the coming years.
The Social Contract Theory

During the Enlightenment, social philosophers


pondered the natural laws that govern human
societies, and in their discussion, several
philosophers put forth their theories regarding
the formation of societies.

To fully understand the true character of


society, philosophers imagined human as living
in a so-called “natural state”
FORMS OF SOCIAL INFLUENCE

Conformity
 is the act of adjusting your behavior, opinions, or
beliefs to agree with the prevailing norm or standard.

Why do people conform?


1. To be accepted
2. To avoid social disapproval, ridicule, or
rejection
3. To satisfy the need for approval from others
are likely anxious or have o low self- esteem.
4. By conforming you get a sense of security that
you are one to the group.

Compliance
 occurs when individual gives in or
agrees with the other person or group, even
if
one holds a different opinion about the
person or
situation. Unlike conformity wherein the
person
adjusts or changes attitudes and beliefs, the
person who is complying adapts to the
actions or
rules of another but does not necessarily

 This takes place when a respectable,
famous, or well-liked person exerts great
influence on others. The people follow the

of the popular figure

Hunting and Gathering Society

Pastoral Society

Roughly 7,500 years ago,


human societies began to
recognize their ability to
. tame and breed animals and
to grow and cultivate their
own plants.
Horticultural Society

A horticultural society
primarily engages in the
small scale cultivation of
plants, fruits, and vegetables
and the domestication of
animals.
Agrarian or Agricultural Society

This type of society is a


further evolution of the
pastoral and horticultural
societies. This form of
society grows rice and
other crops. They also
began to farm and raise
animals for food.
Feudal Society

A feudal society is based on


the ownership of land. Feudal
societies arose out of
developments in Western
Europe during Medieval times.
Industrial Society

An industrial society is based


on the use of specialized
machinery in the production
of goods and services. The
advances in science and
technology in the late 18th
century resulted in the
industrial revolution.
Post-Industrial Society

The post-industrial society is


marked by the establishment
of societies based on
knowledge, information, and
the sale of services.

Virtual Society- where


people organize themselves
through communication
technology and the internet.

 As industry changed, social and political conditions
transformed.
 The revolutionary change in our way of life in
modern times, which for several centuries was
confined principally to the Western people, has in
our lifetime come to affect all of humanity.
 Human relations are transformed by social systems
specifically, on knowledge, laws, economics, and
technology.

SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION

Social transformation refers to the process of


change in institutionalized relationships, norms,
values, and hierarchies over time.

Social Transformation is the way society changes
due to a variety of factors that influence the life of
individuals in the society.

 economic growth
 science
 technological innovations
 Political framework
 War or Political upheavals
How does society influence our development
as persons?
Social System- an organized or patterned set of relationships
among individuals and groups that compose a society.
Social Role- the actions and behaviors expected of a certain
individual.
Social Institutions- certain group that that perform vital
functions in society.

Society also transforms human relations, which leads to


the transformation of its member.

Social Values- which are actions or ideals that are considered


important by societies.
Generation Gap- disparity in experience and views.
How does society enable me to become a
better person?
 Society recognizes the capability of the
person to develop, and provides its
members with opportunities to better
themselves.

 Persons can also undertake to contribute


to society through their decisions and
actions.

Social Movement- a large-scale action done by


various groups and organization in pursuit of a
common goal to bring about change.
ACTIVITY

Direction: Answer the following question. Write the answer on a

1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of living in a post-
industrial/technological society? (Give 2)
2. How human relations are transformed by social systems. Explain
each of the factors that drives social transformation.
