Key Vocabulary-Meanings

Vibrations:forward and backward movement of object

about a fixed point.
Longitudinal wave:A wave in which particles of the
medium vibrate parallel or antiparallel to the direction
of motion of the wave.
Compression: is a region where the particles are closely
packed.
Rarefaction is the region where particles are well apart.

Main Activity ‫النشاط الرئيسي‬

Learning Objectives: ‫هدف التعلم‬

After this lesson ,the students will be able to
Define sound.Explain how sound is produced

Activity: ‫النشاط‬
Students will solve 6
questions.
1.SOUND

Sound is in the form Musical Instruments

of energy.
It is produced by
vibrating objects.
It travels through the
medium as
Longitudinal waves.
It needs medium to
travel like
solid ,liquid and gas. 7

Activity 1
1)what is sound?

2)what type of waves are sound

waves?

9
1.Sound

Sound is a
longitudinal wave.
What is meant by
longitudinal wave?
A wave in which
particles of the
medium vibrate
parallel or
antiparallel to the
direction of motion of
the wave or transfer 10
1.Sound

Longitudinal waves have

two regions such as
Compressions and
rarefactions as shown in
the diagram.
Compression is a region
where the particles are
closely packed.
Rarefaction is the region
where particles are well
apart. 11

Activity 2
1)What are compressions and rarefactions
in Longitudinal waves(sound waves)?

12
1.Sound

What is a
wavelength?
Wavelength is a
length of a wave.
The distance
between the two
consecutive
compressions or
rarefactions is the
wavelength of a 13
1-Sound

What is frequency?
The number of waves produced in
one second or number of
vibrations produced in one second
is known as frequency.

14
1-Sound

What is meant by the Amplitude

of a wave?
The height of the wave measured
from the middle position of the
wave.

15
1-Sound

Speed of Sound waves.

The speed of sound waves is
different in different medium.
The speed of sound in air 330
m/s .
The speed of sound in water is
1200 m/s
The speed of sound in steel is
5000 m/s
16
1-sound

Speed of sound depends on the

following factors.
1)Temperature
2) density of the medium

17
ACtivity-3 Class Work

Q1)Define the terms

wavelength,frequency and
amplitude.
Q2)State the two factors on which
the speed of the sound depends.
Q3)Can sound waves travel in
vacuum?
Q4) What is meant by sound of
frequency 2000 Hz.
