About me!
 BA in Linguistics
and Japanese

 TEFL Certification
THE WHAT
• What is ESL, EFL, TESOL, TEFL, &
CELTA?
• What is certification?
ESL = English as

Acronyms
Learning
English Language
a Second
Language
English language

education in countries
where English is the
official or dominant L1
(first) language
USA, UK, Australia,

Canada, etc
EFL = English as
a Foreign
Language
English language

education in countries
where English is not the
official or L1 (first)
language
Japan and most of the

world
TEFL = Teaching

Acronyms
Certification
English as a
Foreign
Language
A common industry

acronym referring to
teaching English abroad;
used interchangeably with
TESOL
TESOL =
Teachers of
English to
Speakers of
Other Languages
A common industry

acronym referring to
teaching English abroad;
used interchangeably with
TEFL
CELTA

CELTA = Certificate in
English Language Teaching
to Adults
 A specific brand of TEFL certification
awarded by the University of
Cambridge’s Cambridge English
Assessment
 Offered worldwide by different
campuses
THE WHY
• Why do I need TEFL certification?
• I don’t want to be a teacher after
JET. Do I need certification?
Career Goals
I want to teach
TESOL after JET!
 TEFL
Certification
offers a basic
foundation for
your career
before
committing to
a graduate
program
 You need
certification
in order to
teach in
most
countries
 JETs have
limited
experience;
we are only
ALTs for EFL
students
 Compliment
the JET
experience
I don’t want to be a
teacher!
 TEFL
Certification
is concrete
evidence
that you
took your
work
seriously to
improve
skills while
 Compliment
the
remainder of
your JET
experience
THE HOW
• Choosing your TEFL certification
program
Consider the following…
Academics
 Class elements
Location – Program length
– Curriculum – Practicum
 Accreditation
 Program credentials
 Tuition
 Industry Standard

Academics
 100-200 hours of study with
6-20 hours of practicum
Online course (2-3 months

part time)
Campus course (4-6 weeks)

Cautions

Most employers will not

recognize a certification
course under 120 hours
If you plan to teach abroad:

do not select a course under

100 hours. Certification
courses without a live
practicum component are not
internationally recognized
Is the TEFL certification

Accreditation

internationally recognized
and accredited?
Double check if your selected

program is actually accredited

and by what accrediting body
Cautions

Paying for a membership into

academic associations is not

based on any accreditation
criteria and is not the
equivalent of accreditation
Does CELTA dominate the
market?
 Deciding to obtain CELTA over
other programs is the same as
deciding to get a degree at XYZ
University instead of ABC
University – it depends on your
needs as a teacher
Is CELTA right for you?
PROS CONS
 4 week/120 hour TEFL  Tuition: $2795
certification with
practicum (live English
 Adult education only
teaching)  Does not include
 Globally recognized & career support after
accredited graduation
 Offers part time, full time,
and online options
 Requires practicum at
 Has ideal hours and very limited locations
practicum requirements  USA: only 14 states
for certification offer 17 approved
practicum campuses
 Japan: only Kobe offers
1
What about TESOL certification programs
at graduate schools?

 Many graduate programs with a MA in TESOL

also provide non-degree seeking TESOL
certification
 Usually 4-12 credits, depending on program length
 Can last 4 intensive weeks to 2 semesters
 Tuition ranges $5000-10000+
 Career support after graduation is usually included
 These programs require application to the program
through the university and are usually on campus
or abroad only, thus many cannot be completed on
