•Collision Theory
Definition
• Rate of reaction?
– The speed at which reactants are
converted into products in a chemical
reaction.
– High or low based on time taken

• Is it the rate same for all reaction?

How to measure rate of reaction?
• Volume of gas liberated
• Precipitate
• Mass
• Colour
• Temperature
• Pressure
Factors affecting the rate of
reaction

• Total surface of solid reactant

• Concentration of reactant
• Temperature of reactant
• Pressure of gaseous reactant
• Use of catalyst
Collision theory
• Particles have kinetic energy, continually
moving all the time and collide with each
other.
• The collision that are successful in
producing a chemical reaction are called
effective collision
Collision theory states that for a chemical
reacion to occur, the particles must:
1. Collide with each other
2. Produced energy that is equal or higher
than minimum energy called activation
energy(????)
3. Collide on the correct orientation
Activation energy
• Minimum energy that must overcome by
the colliding particles of the reactant in
order for reaction to occur.
Effect of surface area
• The smaller the size of solid particles the
higher the rate of reaction…why?
• The smaller the size of the particles, the
greater the total surface area exposed for
reaction…
• For details, let see the collision theory..
• The smaller the size of solid particles, the
larger the total surface area exposed for
collision.
• The frequency of effective collision
between reacting particles will increase.
• As result, the rate of reaction increase.
Effect of concentration and
pressure
• An increase in concentration/pressure of the
reactant will increase in the rate of reaction
• Suppose that at any one time 1 in a million
particles have enough energy to equal or
exceed the activation energy. If you had
100 million particles, 100 of them would
react.
• If you had 200 million particles in the same
volume, 200 of them would now react. The
rate of reaction has doubled by doubling
the concentration.
Collision theory…
• When the concentration of reactant ↑,
– No of particles ↑
– No of collision between particles ↑
– Frequency of effective collision ↑
– Rate of reaction ↑
• Similarly when the pressure of reactants
increases.
Effect of temperature
• If the temperature of the reactant is increased,
the rate of reaction also increases.
• Why??
Collision theory
• Increase temperature will increase the
kinetic energy of reacting particles.
• The particles move faster
• No of collision between particles ↑
• Frequency of collision ↑
• The energy produced from collisions are
higher than activation energy
• Rate of reaction ↑
Effect of catalyst
• The use of catalyst can speed up a
reaction….how??

• The presence of catalyst allows the

reaction to take place through a new path
which requires a lower activation energy
• Activation energy become ↓
• More colliding particles are able to achieve the lower
activation energy
• Frequency of effective collision ↑
• Rate of reaction ↑
