Opening Discussion
Which is the more important corporate objective: making a
profit or protecting customers, employees, and the broader
needs of society and the environment?

Previously, it was argued that profit is the primary goal of any firm. But
over time, firms—and society as a whole— came to agree that
corporations have social responsibilities to a range of stakeholders
that they must meet (Corporate Social Responsibility)
Let’s watch this video and
continue our discussion!
Discussion Question
#1
Discuss what it means to be socially responsible and
what factors influence that decision.
• Social obligation: a firm engages in social actions because of its
obligation to meet certain economic and legal responsibilities

• Social responsiveness—when a firm engages in social actions in

response to some popular social need

Can you tell the difference between Social responsiveness and

Social Responsibility?

In-class activity

Discussion Question #2

Green management: managers consider the impact of their

organization on the natural environment.

• Different Green Approaches

Discussion Question #3
Discuss the factors that lead to ethical and unethical behavior.

Exhibit 6.5 shows factors that determine ethical and unethical behavior.
Stage of Moral Development

Exhibit 6.6 shows the three levels and six stages of moral development.
Case 1: Ethical Dilemma
• The manufacturing cost of the widgets your company makes has dropped by

50%. One of your customers, Sam, tells you he knows this because he is best

friends with your company’s VP of production and asks you for a discount on his

order. Your boss okays the discount. Your other customer, Sue (who is one of

your best friends and knows nothing about the drop in manufacturing costs),

places the exact same order for widgets as Sam.

Q- Do you offer her a similar discount? Do you tell her about the drop in manufacturing costs?
Discussion Question #4
Describe management’s role in encouraging ethical behavior.

• The behavior of managers is the single

most important influence on an
individual’s decision to act ethically or
unethically.

• Nonprogrammed decisions are unique

decisions that require a custom-made
solution and are used when the
problems are new or unusual
(unstructured) and for which
information is ambiguous or
incomplete.
Discussion Question #5
Discuss current social responsibility and ethics issues.

• Firms should adopt policies to protect whistle-blowers.

• Social entrepreneurship has the potential to solve numerous global
problems.
• Social media is a good way to communicate socially responsible
actions.
• Corporate philanthropy has benefits to society and the firm.

Case 2: A Novel Wellness
Culture
• Work in pairs! Read the case study handed to you well and answer the following
questions:

• 6-12. Do you think that Technogym’s success stories in social responsibility would also help
the company in becoming more profitable?

• 6-13. Explain whether Alessandri’s approach is a social obligation, social responsiveness, or

social responsibility.

• 6-14. It’s time to think like a manager. Corporate social responsibility is wonderful, though
often criticized as purely rhetorical and laden with subtle profit goals. How can a manager
emphasize genuineness of corporate social responsibilities and activities in society?

• 6-15. Do you think that the collaboration between the managers of the Let’s Move campaign
and Play Wellness is beneficial for both companies? Explain.
