WCPT
• World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT) is an international
organisation for physiotherapy.
• Founded in 1951 by 11 national PT organizations.
• India became its member in 1967 via IAP.
• It is the sole international voice for physiotherapy.
• Represents more than 6,00,000 physiotherapists worldwide through its 128
members.
• World physiotherapy ( previously known as WCPT) is a non-profit organisation
and is registered as a charity in UK.
• It has been in official relations with the World Health Organization
(WHO) since 1952.
• Also it is a member of the World Health Professions Alliance.

• Curriculum Development: Develop and update the curriculum for the
physiotherapy programs to ensure it aligns with current best practices and

IAP- Indian Association of
Physiotherapists
• The IAP is a professional organization representing physiotherapists
across India.
• It aims to promote the profession, advocate for its members, and
ensures the delivery of high-quality physiotherapy services.
IAP- Role and Function
1. Advocacy and Representation
• Government Relations: engages with the gov bodies to advocate for the
recognition, regulation, and development of physiotherapy profession in
India.
• Professional Representation: Represents the interests of PT in national and
international forums, ensuring their voices are heard in policy-making
processes.
2. Professional Development
• Organizes workshops, seminars, conferences, and online courses to provide
education and training opportunities for physiotherapists.
IAP- Role and Function
3. Standard Setting:
• Practice Guidelines- to ensure consistent and evidence-based patient care.
• Ethical Standards- establishes and promotes a code of ethics and professional
conduct.
4. Accreditation and certification
• Works towards the accreditation of physiotherapy educational programs.
• Offers certification for PT, recognizing their qualification and expertise in the
field.
5. Research and publication
• Encourages and supports research activities within the physiotherapy field.

Code of ethics
• Principles:
• Respect for Rights and Dignity: Treat all patients fairly and without
discrimination, respecting their autonomy and choices.
• Professional Competence : commit to lifelong learning to maintain and enhance
professional skills and knowledge.
• Integrity and Honesty: Provide accurate information, avoid conflicts of interest,
and act in the best interests of patients.
• Confidentiality: safeguard patient information, sharing it only with consent or
when legally required.
• Accountability: take responsibility for personal and professional actions and
decisions.

• This code guides PT in their day-to-day interactions with patients, colleagues,
and the public, ensuring ethical and professional behaviour.
Professional Conduct
• Ethical Practice: adhering to the principles outlined in the code of ethics,
ensuring all actions are in the best interest of the patient.
• Record Keeping: Maintaining detailed, accurate, and up-to-date patient
records to ensure continuity of care and legal compliance.
• Effective Communication: engaging in clear, respectful and compassionate
communication with patients, their families,and other healthcare
professionals.
• Professionalism : demonstrating a professional demeanour through
appropriate dress, behaviour, and interaction.

Undergraduate Education
• Curriculum: a typical BPT program includes-
• Basic Sciences: Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, pharmacology, Biomechanics, etc
• Clinical Sciences: Neurology, Orthopaedics, Pediatrics, Geriatrics, cardiopulmonary physiotherapy.

Postgraduate Education
• Focus on specialized areas and advanced clinical skills.
• Specializations: Musculoskeletal,Neurological,Cardiopulmonary,Sport, Pediatrics
