CH1: SURVEYING INSTRUMENTATION

CE 260/261 FIELD MEASUREMENTS

WHAT IS SURVEYING?
Surveying is the art and science of measuring
angles, distances and positions (northing, easting
and elevation), on or near the surface of the earth.
GEOMATICS
Geomatics is a term
describing the
computerization and
digitization of geographic
data collection, data
processing, data analysis
and data output.
GROUP EXERCISE – 15 MINUTES
Brainstorm Questions:
1. What type of geographic information is
needed?
2. How is geographic information used?
 Transportation
 Land Use and Development  Telematics
 Municipal Govt Infrastructure  Agriculture
 Defense and Security  Electric and Gas Utility
 Land Registry & Tax  Census and Elections
Assessments
GEOMATICS DATA MODEL
FIELD SURVEYING
Collection of data
through traditional
survey techniques
TAPES
Used for short measurements.
Distances, Height of
Instruments.
Steel and Fiberglass
TRIPOD
Mounting system
Levels
Theodolites
Total Stations

Device screws on top

PLUMB BOB
Bronze weight on a string
Used for point location
Hold string under
instrument and the weight
should be over the point
LEVEL AND ROD
Used to determine
elevation relative to
known benchmark.
Mounts on Tripod.
LEVELS
LEVELS
Leveling Base
Three Screws
Spirit Level
LEVEL AND ROD
THEODOLITES
Measure horizontal and vertical angles.
Mounts on tripod.

TOTAL STATION & PRISM
 Measures Elevations, Distances
and Angles.
 Electronic Distance
Measurement (EDM).
 Can implement field calculations.
 Prism replaces the level rod
 Mounts on Tripod
TOTAL STATIONS
 Components
 Electronic angle measurement
 Electronic distance measurement (EDM)
 On-board or interfaced digital storage
 Electronic monitoring of instrument status and operation, and control of
program applications

 Level of complexity for us as surveyors has increased dramatically

since development
DATA COLLECTOR
The Data Collector is connected to
the Total Station unit and records
information for us in the field

Our data collector uses a software

program known as Survey Pro
(windows based)
FIELD OPERATIONS
 Point location
 Missing line measurement
 Resection
 Remote object elevation
 Distance offset measurements
 Angle offset measurements
 Layout, or setting out positions
 Area computations
GLOBAL NAVIGATION SATELLITE SYSTEM (GNSS)
POINT POSITIONING

Satellite positions
are known.
Distance between
receiver and each
Satellite are known
GNSS: GPS RECEIVERS
GPS Receivers need 4+ satellite signals to
accurately determine position
Northing, Easting, Elevation
Mount on tripod
REMOTE SENSING
PHOTOGRAMMETRY AND REMOTE
SENSING
Photogrammetry - photographs for
surveying and mapping

Manned aircrafts/UAVs/Drones
 Infrared
 LiDAR
 Satellite Imagery
LIDAR
Light Detection and
Ranging
Measures distance to
object or impedance
using a laser
Data collectively called
“Point Clouds”
SATELLITE IMAGERY
Digital image analysis
to classify terrain
Soil/Rock type
Measure distances
DATA OUTPUTS
COMPUTER-AIDED DESIGN
AutoCAD Civil 3D

Used for
engineering
projects
Planning
Design
