Fractions
Success Criteria
• All Students are able to list all the types of fraction and give example for
each type.
• Most Students are able to simplify fraction to the most simplest form and
find equivalent fractions.

NUMERATOR

DENOMINATOR

PROPER FRACTION: When the numerator is less than denominator. Eg:

IMPROPER FRACTION: When the numerator is greater than the denominator. Eg: ,

MIXED NUMBER: When it is mixed between a whole number and a fraction part. Eg:3

Keywords: Numerator, Denominator, Equal parts, Whole

Equivalent Fractions

• Equivalent fractions are fractions that have equal value. Eg: = = =

Simplify Fractions
• To simplify a fraction to the simplest form:
– Step 1: Find the GCF of numerator and denominator
– Step 2: Divide both numerator and denominator by the GCF in step 1.

Compare fractions
• Step 1: Make sure denominators of both fractions are the same
• Step 2: Compare the numerator

Convert improper fraction to mixed number
• Step 1: Divide the numerator to denominator, and get the whole number
and the remainder.
• Step 2: The whole number in step 1 is the whole number part in the mixed
number and the remainder is the numerator in the fraction part, the
denominator remain the same for both.

Convert mixed number to improper fraction
• Step 1: Multiply the whole number part to denominator, and add the
numerator to get the new numerator.
• Step 2: The denominator remain the same for both.
