QUADRAPOLE MASS SPECTROMETER

QUADRAPOLE MASS SPECTROMETER

• Quadarpole mass spectrometer is a type of mass spectrometer that

uses electric fields to analyze ion based on their mass to charge ratio.
it consists of four parallel metal rods that create a varying electric field
when an alternating current is applied.

• This field selectively filters ions based on their mass to charge ratio,
allowing the spectrometer to identify and quantity different compounds
present in a samples.

• It’s widely used in various scientific and industrial applications,

including environmental monitoring, pharmaceuticals, and forensic
analysis
•The quadrapole mass spectrometer is a very versatile analytical
instrument cable of compositional analysis of gases and volatile
liquids .
•It consists of an electron impact ion sources, quadrupole mass
analyzer and detector.
The quadrupole mass spectrometer is a compact,
reliable and low cost analytical tool which has
numerous application in the industry.

APPLICATIONS OF QMS :
Gas compositional analysis from chemical
and physical processes.
Residual gas analysis in Ultra High Vacuum
system.
Molecular weight and structural identifications
in many organic compounds.
Technology has been transferred to PVT
industry.

• Four parallel cylindrical rods serve as electrodes.

• Opposite rods are connected electrically
• One pair attached to positive side of variable de source
One pair attached to negative side of variable de source
• Variable radio-frequency ac potential (180° out of phase) applied to
each pair of rods.
• The result is an ac potential superimposed on a de potential and this
creates an electric field.
Ions accelerated through the electric field between rods.
ac and dc voltages increased simultaneously with ratio
being constant
All ions without specific m/e strike rods and become
neutral
Only ions having a limited range of m/e reach detector.
Features of Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer
The quadrupole acts as a filter so is often called the mass
filter.
Sample must be ionized and it should be in gas phase.
Has smaller range and lower resolution than magnetic
sector but faster.
More compact
less expensive
High scan rate
TYPES OF QMS
 Quadrapole Mass Filter (QMF);
 This is the most common types where the ions are
filtered based on their mass to change ratio (m/z) using
the quadrupole mass filter described earlier.
 It operates in either scanning mode (scanning through
a range of m/z ratio to generate a mass spectrum ) or
selected ion monitoring mode ( where specific m/z
values are monitored ).
 QMFs are versatile and widely used in various
applications due to their relatively simple design and
robust performance.
 There are used in analytical chemistry and
laboratories.
2. QUADRUPOLE ION STORAGE .
 Quadrupole ion storage typically refers to the uses of a quadrupole
ion trap (QIT)in mass spectroscopy.
A quadrupole ion trap is a device that uses four rods to trap and
store ions within a confidence space.
Ion trapping : ions are introduced into the quadrupole ion trap,
where they are trapped and confined by applying suitable RF and
DC voltages to the rods .
Stability conditions : the RF and DC voltages are adjusted to create
a stable trapping field . This field allows ions of specific mass to
change ratio (m/z) to remain trapped while others are ejected or
collide with the rods.
Application : structure elucidation of molecules proteins,
metabolisms, small molecule analysis, and gas phase ion chemistry .
