Stephen Patterson Exonerated
After 18 Years in Prison for Murder

• Los Angeles, March 13, 2024 – Today, Stephen Patterson was
exonerated and declared factually innocent in Los Angeles Superior
Court. Patterson was wrongly convicted of a 2005 shooting between
rival gangs in the Florence neighborhood of South Los Angeles.
• What started as two gangs throwing gang signs at each other
ended with one man shooting and killing Yair Oliva, a Florencia 13
gang member.
• Patterson (age 19 at the time), who lived around the corner, came
outside after hearing the gunshots, and was seen in his front yard
by other witnesses.
• Despite his alibi, a witness wrongly claimed Patterson was the
shooter.

dare to die. But God demonstrates
his own love for us in this: While we
were still sinners, Christ died for us.
If Jesus was

convicted felon
who serves
time, we are still
a lawbreaker.
Jesus came to do two things:
•Pay the penalty for our
sin.
•To make us righteous so
that God could legally
give us eternal life.

in prison
• Jesus fulfilled the two greatest
commandments by dying for our sin.
Had He refused, He would have broken
the two greatest commandments. He
then would also be a lawbreaker.
• But by keeping the two greatest
commandments, He kept all of the law
and was awarded eternal life
Isaiah 53:10-11
Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he
hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make
his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his
seed, he shall prolong his days, and the
pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his
hand.
He shall see of the travail of his soul, and

my righteous servant justify many; for he
