NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION Nonverbal communication is type of message transmission from one person to another without the use of spoken or written language. Nonverbal communication can occur in a variety of ways, including through facial expressions, gestures, and body NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION Nonverbal communication is a tool that strengthen the transfer of information more than what can a speech does. Scientific research on nonverbal communication and behavior began with the 1872 publication of Charles Darwin’s book The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals. – The book is a study of the muscular movements of our face and body (both TYPES OF NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION Facial expressions Gestures Paralinguistics Body Posture Proxemics Eye gaze Haptics Appearance Facial expressions A facial expression is one or more motions or positions of the muscles beneath the skin of the face. The look on a person's face is often the first thing we see, even before we hear what they have to say. While nonverbal communication and behavior can vary dramatically between cultures, the facial expressions for Gestures Gestures are overt and observable movements or actions using various parts of the body. They may involve the use of a single body part like the wagging of a finger or a nod, or multiple body parts at the same time, like signaling with both hands or using the hand and the head together. It indicates the position of the body in space and has the purpose of maintaining the body in balance, during the dynamic movement and Body Posture Proxemics Proxemics is defined as the amount of space that people feel which set themselves between others. The amount of distance we need and the amount of space we perceive as belonging to us are influenced by several factors. Among them are social norms, cultural expectations, situational factors, personality Proxemics The amount of personal space needed when having a casual conversation with another person can vary between 18 inches and four feet. The personal distance needed when speaking to a crowd of people is usually around 12 to 25 feet. Eye Gaze The eyes play a role in nonverbal communication, with such things as looking, staring, and blinking being important cues. People's eyes can indicate a range of emotions, including hostility, interest, and attraction. People also often utilize eye gaze cues Haptics Communicating through touch is called as haptics. Touch can be used to communicate affection, familiarity, sympathy, and other emotions. Gender differences also play a role in how people utilize touch to communicate meaning. Women tend to use touch to convey care, concern, and nurturance. Men, on the other hand, are more likely to use touch to assert power or Appearance Our choice of clothing, hairstyle, and other appearance factors are also considered a means of nonverbal communication. Research on color psychology has demonstrated that different colors can evoke different moods and so appearance can also alter psychological reactions, judgments, and interpretations.
