VALUES

 LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson students should be able to
1. Explain the meaning of values
2. Explain the types of values

3. State the importance of values


MEANING OF VALUE
 The term value connotes worth,
usefulness, norm, esteem, merit, or
degree of quality. By way of definition,
values are moral principles, ideas and
beliefs cherished by the people in
society.
 It can also be defined as the worth, merit
or esteem attributed to something or
someone.
 Values can be desirable or undesirable,
monetary or non-monetary, positive or
negative, good or bad, extrinsic or
intrinsic and so on.
 Examples of good values are; honesty,
contentment, faithfulness, integrity,
moral probity, hard work, perseverance,
justice, tolerance, fair play, etc.
TYPES/KINDS OF VALUES
 Positive values: These are desirable and acceptable societal values.

They include: honesty, humility, transparency, consistency,

commitment, contentment, and so on.

 Negative values: These are undesirable and unacceptable qualities or

principles in society. Examples are corruption, embezzlement,

dishonesty, lying, improper dressing, killing, etc.

 General/Universal Values: These are common principles and norms

that are generally good and acceptable. Examples include: liberty,

equality, tolerance, hard work, selflessness, justice, honesty, etc.


 Personal values: These are values an individual
considers right and acceptable in society.
Examples are justice, love, peace, purity, etc
 Extrinsic/Instrumental Values: These are
values attributed to things by people as means to
an end. Examples are wealth, fame, jobs,
machines, loving, cheerful, etc.
 Intrinsic Values: These are values possessed by

things or individuals for their sake. They are


good in themselves. Examples are truth, beauty,
goodness, temperance, courage, honesty, etc.
 Group Values: These are principles that are collectively
accepted or cherished by a group of people such as cult
group and religious groups.
 Spiritual Values: These are values placed on religious,
divine or sacred things. For instance, the bible, Quran,
God, altar, pastors, etc.
 Material Values: These are values attributed to
substances and objects needed for human sustenance.
Examples are clothing, food, shelter, etc.
