What is an atom?
basic building block
of all matter What is an atom? An atom is the smallest unit of an element that takes part in chemical reactions. It retains the properties of its element and is made up of three main particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons have a positive charge, neutrons have no charge, and electrons have a negative charge. Atoms have an equal number of protons and electrons, making them overall neutral in charge. The nucleus, which contains protons and neutrons, is positively charged and holds most of the atom's mass, while electrons move around the nucleus. Why atom is overall neutral?
An atom is neutral because it has an equal number
of protons (positive charge) and electrons (negative charge), which balance each other out. Where is most of the mass of an atom concentrated? Most of the mass of an atom is concentrated in its nucleus, which contains protons and neutrons. What makes atoms of different elements distinct from each other? Atoms of different elements have different numbers of protons, which makes them distinct. Calculating numbers of subatomic particles number of protons Mass number = atomic number =Total number of number of neutrons proton and = neutron number of electrons mass number - atomic = atomic number The difference number. between the mass number and atomic number gives the number of neutron EXAMPLES:
