ANSWER:
Matter is anything that takes up
space and can be weighed.
M T A O
ANSWER: ATOM
Atom is a unit of matter;
the smallest unit of a
chemical element. It is
SPHERICAL in shape.

ANSWER:
A proton is a subatomic particle
found in the nucleus of every atom.
The particle has a positive
electrical charge.

ANSWER:
An electron is a negatively charged
component of an atom. Electrons
exist outside of and surrounding the
atom nucleus.

ANSWER:
Neutron is a particle found in the
nucleus of an atom. It is almost
identical in mass to a proton, but
carries no electric charge.
ASSIGNMENT

½ crosswise, research about the history of

an atom
1. Democritus
2. John Dalton
3. J.J Thomson
 Atoms in their stable state are neutral- its number of
protons and electrons are equal.
 The mass of an atom is solely due to the mass of the proton
and neutron.
 The protons and neutrons are referred as nucleons- which
are tightly packed together, form the nucleus within the
center of the atom.
 Thus, much of the mass of an atom is concentrated at the
nucleus.

discovered that atoms have
negatively-charged particles,
which he called electrons. This
led him to propose a new model
for the atom, which he called the
plum pudding model.

✔ APPLICATION
Directions: Below is a blank representation of an atom. If you
compare your life to an atom, what will be the things/areas that you
will place in the center of your life? Complete the atomic model below
by placing the areas/things in your life either in the center or at the
sides of the circle. Suggested answers are written inside the small
circles below that serve as the subatomic particles.

✔ ASSIGNMENT Bring your own periodic table. (20 points)
Have you ever
wondered what
everything around
you is made of?
✔ Activity 1
Refer to the periodic table below. Locate the atomic
number and answer the questions on the next page.

Questions:
1. What is the element with an atomic number of 15?
_____________
2. How many protons does the atom of this element have?
_____________
3. How many electrons are there in an atom of aluminum (Al)?
_____________
4. Among the elements in the periodic table, which has the smallest
number of proton? _____________
NUCLEUS
center of an atom
where protons and neutron are
packed together
But how does the nucleus of an atom
of one element differ from the
nucleus of an atom of another
element?
Atomic Number
number of protons in the nucleus
Atomic Mass/Weight
indicates the size of an atom
the sum of all the protons, neutrons, and electrons
What are neutral atoms?
single atom is said to be electrically neutral if its number of
electrons (e-) is equal to the number of protons (p+).

Remember these:
Mass number (A) = # of protons (p+) + # of neutrons (n0)
Atomic Number (Z) = # of protons (p+) = # of electrons (e-)
# of neutron (n0) = mass number (A) – # of protons (p+)

Solution:
Mass number (A) = 11 and Atomic number (Z) = 5

 All atoms of an element contain the same number
of protons in their nuclei.
 The number of protons in an atom of a given
element is referred as atomic number, designated
as Z.
 The number of protons must be equal to the
number of electrons in an electrically neutral
atom.
 However, when the number of protons and
electrons is not equal, ions are formed.
