Planets’ distance from the
Sun
INTRODUCTIO
N
As we all know, we have 8 planets
in our solar system – the Mercury,
Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn,
Uranus, and Neptune. They have
different characteristics yet the
Earth is the most unique planet as
it is at the right distance from the
Sun.
PLANETS DISTANCE FROM THE SUN
One astronomical unit is defined as the distance from earth to the sun.

PLANETS DISTANCE FROM THE SUN

MERCURY 0.39 AU (35,980,000 miles)

VENUS 0.72 AU (67,240,000 miles)

EARTH 1.00 AU (92,960,000 miles)

MARS 1.52 AU (141,600,00 miles)

JUPITER 5.20 AU (483,800,000 miles)

SATURN 9.54 AU (890,700,000 miles)

URANUS 19.22 AU (1,787,000,000 miles),

NEPTUNE 30.06 AU (2,798,000,000 miles

SUN’S ENERGY
The amounts of energy
received by the planets
AMOUNT OF SUN ENERGY THE PLANETS
GETS FROM THE SUN
• Because Mercury is very close to the Sun, the
intensity of sunlight on its surface is between 4.59
and 10.61 times the solar constant (amount of
the Sun's energy received at 1 astronomical unit,
which is roughly the distance between Earth and
the Sun).
• At 872°F (467°C), its surface temperature is hot
enough to melt lead! Venus' atmosphere is so
reflective that the planet absorbs only 2.5% of
solar energy (Earth absorbs 50%). Since very little
of it reaches the surface, there is little variation in
temperature across the Venusian globe as it orbits
the sun.
• The Earth absorbs most of the energy reaching its
surface, a small fraction is reflected. In total
approximately 70% of incoming radiation is
absorbed by the atmosphere and the Earth's
surface while around 30% is reflected back to
space and does not heat the surface.
AMOUNT OF SUN ENERGY THE PLANETS
GETS FROM THE SUN
• As Mars doesn't have a fine atmosphere like us
and is only 1.5237 times further from Sun than
us. So, solar flux on Earth being 1376 Watts/m^2.
While solar flux on Mars is just about 43% of ours
which gives about 591.68 Watt/m^2.
• Jupiter is five times farther from the sun than the
Earth is; at this great distance, it receives a fraction
of the sun's warming rays, keeping the planet very
cold. Based on the energy Jupiter receives from the
sun, astronomers expected it to have a temperature
of 105 kelvins (minus 271 degrees Fahrenheit
• Saturn is more than 9 times farther away from the
Sun as Earth is from the Sun. As a result, Saturn
receives less than approximately 1/81 or 1.2 %
of the sunlight that Earth receives.
AMOUNT OF SUN ENERGY THE PLANETS
GETS FROM THE SUN
• Since Uranus lies more than 19 AU from the Sun, it
receives 360 times less light and heat from the Sun
than Earth. As a result, its atmosphere is
extremely cold, with a temperature of about -
214C at the 1 bar pressure level (equivalent to the
average air pressure at sea level on Earth).
• Neptune is the farthest planet from the Sun, and
lies over 50% farther from the Sun than Uranus,
and receives only 40% its amount of sunlight, yet
its internal energy is sufficient to drive the fastest
planetary winds seen in the Solar System.

WHAT MAKES EARTH
HABITABLE?
EARTH IS THE ONLY PLANET THAT CAN SUPPORT LIFE

It is the right distance from the Sun, it is protected from

harmful solar radiation by its magnetic field, it is kept warm
by an insulating atmosphere, and it has the right chemical
ingredients for life, including water and carbon. It is located
in the goldilocks zone.
04
THE GOLDILOCK’S
ZONE
The habitable zone is also known as the "Goldilocks
zone“
because planets orbiting at that "just right" distance
from a star are not too hot or too cold to host liquid
water. If planets are closer to their star, the water turns
to steam; if they're farther, it freezes.
Goldilocks zone named for the “not too hot, not too
cold, but just right” statement, the Goldilocks Zone
(or habitable zone) represents a zone around a star
that has the right conditions to allow for liquid water
(between 0oC and 100oC).
According to NASA after all, Earth isn't the only planet
in the Sun's Goldilocks Zone - Venus and Mars are also
in this habitable zone, but aren't currently habitable.
But, planet Mars is more believed to contain three most
essential requirement of life. Chemical building blocks
abundance, source of water and a source of energy as

ADVANTAGES
OF THE EARTH’S DISTANCE
FROM THE SUN
• The Earth is at an optimum distance from the sun. Hence, it
is neither too hot nor too cold.
• The distance between the earth and the sun makes life
possible on earth. If it was closer to the sun, any life present
would get burnt from too much heat of the sun. If it was
farther from the sun, life would freeze because of lack of
heat.
• One advantage of the Earth's distance from the Sun is that it
allows for the existence of life as we know it.
• The distance is just right to maintain a relatively stable
climate, with temperatures that support the presence of
liquid water, which is essential for life.
• Additionally, the Earth's distance from the Sun also affects
the length of our year and the seasons we experience.

DISADVANTAGES
OF THE EARTH’S DISTANCE
FROM THE SUN
It probably doesn’t sound right on a hot summer day, but Earth
is actually farthest from the Sun for the entire year about now
— more than 94 million miles.

Earth’s orbit around the Sun is a bit lopsided. The average

distance to the Sun is about 93 million miles. But during the
year, the distance varies by about three percent in either
direction.

That slight variation is known as the “eccentricity” of the orbit.

The orbits of all the planets are eccentric, but by different
amounts. Venus’s orbit is the least eccentric — less than one
percent. Mercury’s is the most eccentric — about 20 percent.

In fact, it’s almost impossible for one body to have a perfectly

circular orbit around another. Earth and the other planets of
the solar system, for example, are pushed and pulled by the
gravity of all the other planets. And collisions with other bodies

CONCLUSION
EARTH IS AT THE RIGHT
DITANCE FROM THE SUN
As we know it, Earth is the only
planet that can sustain life. It is a
habitable planet because it is not too
much exposed from the sun nor less
exposed to it. We are living with the
exact sun energy and atmosphere
that can definitely support the living
things in the planet.
Even though there are some
disadvantages, the earth’s right
distance from the sun still plays a
vital role in sustaining and
supporting one’s life.
