UNIFORMLY ACCELERATED MOTION
VERTICAL DIMENSION
GRAVITY
 The force that attracts a body
toward the center of the earth
FREE FALLING OBJECT
 Object that is falling
under the sole
influence of gravity
CONCEPTUAL CHARACTERISTICS OF
FREE FALL MOTION

 An object in free fall

experiences an acceleration
of -9.8 m/s 2
CONCEPTUAL CHARACTERISTICS OF
FREE FALL MOTION
 If an object is merely dropped
(as opposed to being thrown)
from an elevated height, then the
Initial velocity of the object is 0 m/s
CONCEPTUAL CHARACTERISTICS OF
FREE FALL MOTION
 If an object is projected upwards in a
perfectly vertical direction, then it will
slow down As it rises upward. The
instant At which it reaches the peak of
its trajectory its velocity is 0 m/s.
CONCEPTUAL CHARACTERISTICS OF
FREE FALL MOTION
 If an object is projected upwards in a
perfectly vertical direction, then the
velocity at which it is projected is equal
in magnitude and opposite in sign to the
velocity that it has when it returns to
the same height.
CONCEPTUAL CHARACTERISTICS OF
FREE FALL MOTION
 The acceleration due to gravity is
downward. So a is negative. It is crucial
that the initial velocity and the
acceleration due to gravity have
opposite signs.if up is positive, then g
will be negative, if down is positive, g
SAMPLE PROBLEM

1.Lebron is riding the Giant Drop at

Enchanted Kingdom. If Lebron free
falls for 2.6 seconds, a) what will be
his final velocity? b) how far will he
fall?
SAMPLE PROBLEM

2. A rock was dropped on top

of the building that is 122.5 m
high. How long will the rock
hit the ground?
SAMPLE PROBLEM
3. Rex throws his mother’s crystal
vase vertically upwards with an
initial velocity of 26.2 m/s.
Determine the height to which the
vase will rise above its initial height.
ANALYZE AND SOLVE THE GIVEN PROBLEMS:
1. Bianca drops a pile of roof shingles from the top of a roof
located 8.52 meters above the ground. Determine the time
required for the shingles to reach the ground.
2. Hanz was standing on top of a building and drops a rock
and hits the ground after 5 seconds. What is the final
velocity just before it hits the ground?

3. A rock was dropped on top of the building and hits the

ground after 5 seconds. What is the height of the building?
ACTIVITY 1: DROP ME

OBJECTIVES:
 RECORD THE TIME FOR THE BALL TO REACH THE GROUND
 CALCULATE THE HEIGHT OF THE BUILDING

MATERIALS:
• STOPWATCH
• BALL (e.g. TENNIS BALL, SEPAK TARAW, ETC.
• LONG STRING

• METER STICK
PROCEDURE:

1. LOOK FOR A TALL BUILDING IN YOUR SCHOOL. DROP

THE TENNIS BALL FROM THE TALL BUILDING.

2. USING THE STOPWATCH, ASK YOUR CLASSMATE TO

RECORD THE TIME IT TAKES THE BALL TO REACH THE
GROUND. RECORD YOUR DATA.

3. CALCULATE THE HEIGHT COVERED BY THE BALL USING THE

FORMULA: h= 1/2agt2 (since Vi= 0)

4. USING THE DATA FROM THE TABLE,
CALCULATE THE FINAL VELOCITY OF THE
BALL USING THE FORMULA Vf= ag t since Vi= 0.
TRY CALCULATING THE FINAL VELOCITY
USINGTHE FORMULA Vf= 2agh AND
COMPARE YOUR ANSWERS.
GUIDE QUESTIONS:

1. What is the velocity of the ball just before it hits

the ground?
 Using a very long string, get the actual height
of the building
2. How will you compare the actual height of the
building from the result of the experiment?
3. What is the percentage error?
BOARDWORK:
Analyze and solve the given problems on the board:

1. Bianca drops a pile of roof shingles from the top of a

roof located 8.52 meters above the ground. Determine
the time required for the shingles to reach the ground.

2. Hanz was standing on top of a building and drops a

rock and hits the ground after 5 seconds. What is the
final velocity just before it hits the ground?

students to determine the depth
of the well
Everything that goes down must
come down. But there comes a
time when not everything that’s
down can come up.”
