UNIVERSAL
GRAVITATION
2nd QUARTER
LEARNING OBJECTIVE
▪analyze universal
gravitation;
▪actualize the universal
gravitation through real-life
situations;
LEARNING OBJECTIVE
▪Calculate the missing
quantities through word
problems involving universal
gravitation.
GRAVITY
“Newton’s idea was that gravity
was a universal force acting
between any two objects”
Newton’s Law
of Universal
Gravitation
UNIVERSAL GRAVITATION
▪ EVERY OBJECT IN THE UNIVERSE IS
ATTRACTED TO EVERY OTHER OBJECT
WITH A FORCE THAT IS DIRECTLY
PROPORTIONAL TO THE PRODUCT OF
THEIR MASSES AND INVERSELY
PROPORTIONAL TO THE SQUARE OF
THE DISTANCES BETWEEN THEM.

EXAMPLE
The Moon is attracted to the Earth.
The mass of the Earth is 6.0x10 24

kg and the mass of the Moon is

7.4x10 kg. If the Earth and Moon
22

are 345,000 km apart, what is the

gravitational force between them?
EXAMPLE
An unknown celestial body is attracted to a
star which is 45,000,000km apart to each
other. If the gravitational force between
them is around 6.67 x 10N and the mass
of the star is 3.9 x 1011kg, what is the mass
of this unknown celestial body?
EXAMPLE
Determine the force of gravitational
attraction between the earth (m = 5.98 x
10 kg) and a 70-kg physics student if the
24

student is in an airplane at 40000 feet

above earth's surface. This would place
the student a distance of 6.39 x 10 m from
6

earth's center.
