NEED FOR PURIFICATION

In order to study the structure, physical properties, chemical

properties and biological properties of organic compounds,
they must be in the pure state. So organic compounds must
be purified.
We need pure substances to Measure accurate properties of
the substance. Carry out chemical reactions without side
effects of impurities. Use drugs for medical use without
interference from impurities.
TECHIQUES FOR PURIFICATION
SUBLIMATION
Sublimation is the transition of a
substance directly from a solid state to
a gas state. It does not pass through the
usual liquid state, and only occurs at
specific temperatures and pressures.

Crystallization
1.The solution is heated in an open container
2.The solvent molecules start evaporating, leaving
behind the solutes
3.When the solution cools, crystals of solute start
accumulating on the surface of the solution
4.Crystals are collected and dried as per the product
requirement
5.The undissolved solids in the liquid are separated
by the process of filtration
6.The size of crystals formed during this process
depends on the cooling rate
7.Many tiny crystals are formed if the solution is
cooled at a fast rate
8.Large crystals are formed at slow cooling rates
Differential extraction
This method is used for immiscible liquids like oil and
water. The immiscible liquid is taken in a separating funnel
and left undisturbed for a while. After some time they
separate according to their gravity. The heavier one settles
at the bottom and the lighter one is left on top. Then
collection is done.
Distillation
An important organic process used to separate two or more
than two liquids having different boiling points from a liquid
mixture. An organic process used to separate a liquid organic
compounds from a solid substance.According to the
differences in boiling points between the liquids, distillation
process classified into four types:
1.Simple distillation
3.Steam distillation
2.Fractional distillation
4.Vacuum distillation
Chromatography
Chromatography is an important biophysical technique that enables the
separation, identification, and purification of the components of a
mixture for qualitative and quantitative analysis.
The 4 types of chromatography are:
1.Liquid Chromatography
2.Gas Chromatography
3.Thin-Layer Chromatography
4.Paper Chromatography.
