Nutrition through

Life cyle
Introduction
• A life cycle is a series of changes that an organism will go through throughout
its life, marked by significant stages starting with fertilization and ending with
death.
• The cycle of life is unique to all organisms, and overall stages can change based
on the species. These life cycles can range from simple to complex, and an
organism's life span, or expected time to live out their life cycle, is distinctive to
each individual organism.
• The human life cycle has six main stages: fetus, baby, childhood , adolescent,
adult and elderly
Stages
Factors Affecting Growth and
Development
The growth and development are positively influenced by factors, like parental
health and genetic composition, even before conception.
• Genetic factors
• Fetal health
• After birth, the environmental factors may exert either a beneficial or detrimental
effect on growth.
• Socioeconomic factors.
• Nutrition
Importance of Nutrition
• Nutritional needs should be met at every stage of the life cycle because
nutritional status at one stage influences health status in the next ones.
Lack of adequate nutrition during pregnancy, for example, can program
gene functions for life in ways that set the stage for lifelong metabolic
changes that increase the risk of chronic-disease development.

Malnutrition plays a detrimental role in the process of growth and
development.
Deficiencies of trace minerals can affect growth and development. Iron
deficiency experienced by young children can decrease intellectual capacity
later in life
adequate vitamin D status during adolescence and early adulthood decreases
the risk of breast cancer in older women.
Zinc deficiency might cause growth retardation and developmental delay.
Selenium, iodine, manganese, and copper also play a significant role.

 Growth faltering or rapid weight gain in early childhood influences health
in the later part of life. The diet in early childhood has a strong
association with the likelihood of obesity later in life. 'Early Protein
Hypothesis' shows that lowering the protein supply during infancy helps
achieve normal growth and reduce obesity in early childhood. This
concept of the early protein hypothesis helps in improving the food
products for children.
