INTRODUCTION

 VLSI stands for ‘Very Large scale Integration.’

 Very large scale integration is the process of creating an integrated

circuit(IC) by combining thousands of transistors into a single
chip.

 An electronics circuit might consist of a CPU, ROM, RAM and

other glue logic. VLSI lets IC designers add all these into a single
chip.
INTRODUCTION

 VLSI began in the 1970s when complex semiconductor and

communication technologies were being developed.

 VLSI is a successor to large scale integration (

LSI), medium scale integration (MSI) and small scale integration
(SSI) technologies.

 The first 1 mega byte RAM was built on top of VLSI design
principles and included more than one million transistors on its
microchip dye.

Technologies used in VLSI

 There are mainly 3 technologies used to design a VLSI chip

CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor)
BJT (Bipolar junction transistor)
FET (Field effect transistor)

 In the all above technologies CMOS is most commonly used

technology for VLSI chip design.

VLSI APPLICATIONS

 VLSI is an implementation technology for electronic circuitry -

analogue or digital.
 It is concerned with forming a pattern of interconnected switches
and gates on the surface of a crystal of semiconductor.
o Microprocessor/ Microcontroller
o Personal computer
o Memory
o Optical switches
VLSI APPLICATIONS

In today's world VLSI chips are widely used in various branches of

Engineering like:
1.Voice and Data Communication networks
2.Digital Signal Processing
3.Computers
4.Commercial Electronics
5.Automobiles
6.Medicine and many more.
ADVANTAGES OF VLSI TECHNOLOGY

 Compactness
 Mobility
 Reliability
 less power consumption
 Effective use of space
 Easily available productivity
 Large market background
DISADVANTAGES OF VLSI TECHNOLOGY

 Previously the cost was high of an chip.

 Still the basic things like mobile phone and other product related
things are cheaper but high end product are pocket eater.
