What is personal hygiene?
Personal hygiene is all about
managing your body hygiene,
essentially caring for your well-
being incorporating some physical
hygiene habits. Also, there are
mental health benefits as well, as
they affect each other immensely.
Personal Hygiene are the behaviours that
must be practised in daily life, starting from
morning to sleep time to protect our health.
Personal Hygiene described as the
principle of maintaining cleanliness and
grooming of the external body.
Personal Hygiene defined as the branch of
health which is concerned with the
individual’s adjustment to the physiological
needs of the body and mind for the
attainment of the maximum level of health
What are good personal hygiene habits?
Good personal hygiene includes but not limited
to-
· Take regular shower
· Maintain oral hygiene
· Wash your hands frequently
· Wash your genitals
· Keep your clothes and surrounding dry and clean
These habits should be practiced on a regular
basis, at home, at work, basically where you are!
That’s the whole idea of preventing your body
system collapse over a tiny microbe!
Personal Hygiene Practices at Home
Your home should be the most comfortable and
convenient for you to keep up your personal hygiene
level to a standard, yet, we find ourselves
procrastinating over hygiene issues when we are at
home. Even though some of these tasks barely take a
minute.
1. Take Regular shower
Do not wait up to feel the dried sweat in your body to
feel the urge to take shower, make it a routine, you
have the choice to either take them before you head to
work or after the long day or even before you head to
sleep, whichever one suits your routine. Make sure to
rinse your body thoroughly, especially the genitals and
underarms as they produce more sweat and are more
prone to fungal activities.
2.Wash your hands frequently
It is our hands that we use to do our most physical acts,
from picking up the keys, browsing through our phones to
attending our pets. While we acknowledge the importance
of washing hands before eating and after visiting the
toilet, it is also important to wash our hands with soap
or sanitizer every now and then.
3.Maintain oral hygiene practices
Caring for your teeth and gum is important, not only to
prevent decay related issues but also as they affect
neurologically some other sensual organs, they shouldn’t
be taken in a light manner. Just brushing them twice a day
is not enough, make sure you are using fluoride
toothpaste and brushing properly.
4. Trim your nails and wash your hairs
Your nails and hair store dirt and grease. None not to
mention the microbes could be in there stuck and
spreading. Bad nail hygiene can cause severe food
poisoning since you would be preparing or eating your
food with your hands. Trim the nails every once they are
inappropriately long and wash your hairs at least twice a
week to keep them healthy.
5. Clean your nose and ears
Every time you are outside, you are most likely to breathe
in some pollutants, and most of the particles are bound to
be stuck in your nasal hair. You should rinse your nose
and ear with warm water upon return. Especially if you
have any specific allergies.
6. Wear fresh and warm clothes
Try to change into some warm and dry clothes, you’ll feel
the mental effect immediately as they will boost your
mind. Also, regular washing with right detergent matters
since like your body, your clothes can be contaminated
with germs or microbes, especially if they have been used
for several days.

Good personal hygiene is one of the best ways to protect

yourself from getting gastro or infectious diseases such as
COVID-19, colds and flu. Washing your hands with soap
removes germs that can make you ill. Maintaining good
personal hygiene will also help prevent you from
spreading diseases to other people.
Hygiene routine tips
Helpful tips for creating a hygiene routine include the
following:
● Make it a habit: With daily practice, a new habit can
become a regular part of life. Choose one area to focus
on and practice until it becomes second nature.
● Set reminders: Using the notes app on a cell phone
can be a great way to avoid forgetting any tasks.
● Use rewards: A sticker chart can be a brilliant
incentive for children to maintain their personal
hygiene.
● Invest in nice toiletries: Using products that smell
good may encourage some people to stick to their
personal hygiene routine.
Why is personal hygiene important?
Practicing good personal hygiene is important for
helping keep the body healthy and clean. Good
personal hygiene involves keeping all parts of the
external body clean and healthy. It is important for
maintaining both physical and mental health. In people
with poor personal hygiene, the body provides an ideal
environment for germs to grow, leaving it vulnerable to
infection.
On a social level, people may avoid a person with poor
personal hygiene, which may result in isolation and
loneliness.
What is Personal Grooming?
Personal grooming refers to an art which helps
individuals to clean and maintain their body parts.
Human beings need to wash, clean their body parts to
look good and for personal hygiene as well. Personal
grooming helps in enhancing an individual’s self-
esteem and also goes a long way in developing an
attractive personality.
Personal grooming does not mean applying loads of
makeup and wearing expensive clothes. It refers to
cleaning and maintaining each and every body part for
a pleasing appearance. No one likes to talk to someone
who is dirty and does not take care of personal hygiene
and grooming.
Personal grooming is a must in any career path
especially, the corporate and hospitality sectors.
Most professions are all about personality,
enthusiasm, charm, pride and a caring nature. Most
jobs are highly demanding and skills are not enough
to sustain in this competitive world. A certain
lifestyle and personal commitment are required to
shine in your professional life. Moreover, personal
grooming is a way of life. Everyone should go
about grooming themselves well for their own
satisfaction, for boosting their image and self-
esteem.
The main reasons why you must opt for personal
grooming.

● Personal grooming is all about presenting

yourself in the best possible way focusing on
personal hygiene and cleanliness. The way you
treat the work environment and more
importantly, how you treat yourself would be
speaking volumes about who you are. People
who maintain highest levels of neatness and are
well-groomed appear to be very well-organized
in their work and they maintain a high degree of
neatness in their desk.
● If you are well-groomed it would demonstrate
your ability to take utmost care of yourself. It
would create a positive impression. Conversely, if
you do not care about personal grooming, people
would be wondering that if you cannot take
proper care of yourself, how you could possibly
take care of the business.

● You must understand that the first impression

must be good as often that becomes the last one.
It is a good idea to be always nicely turned-up
and presentable while meeting someone you
could be networking with. This could be a crucial
factor in transforming your career altogether.
● Your office colleagues would pay more
attention to you and they would like you a lot
provided you are well-behaved and well-
groomed. Your clients would be happy to
interact with you as you would be giving out
positive vibes. If you could look so nice and
presentable despite heavy work pressure and
hectic schedules people would know that you
have the quality to manage your time well.
It is not compulsory to look like a beauty queen but
it is necessary to be well-groomed to get an edge
over the others and to stay ahead of the rest.
What does hair type mean?

Hair type is all about your hair's curl pattern. Type 1 hair is straight.
Type 2 is best described as wavy. Type 3 hair is curly, and type 4 is
coily.

What types of hair are there?

Hair shape refers to the degree of curliness of a person’s hair.
One review article Trusted Source notes that different researchers
have used different hair shape categorization systems in their research
about hair. For example, some have used use labels such as:
• stick straight
• straight
• wavy
• big curls
• small curls
Density
Hair density refers to the number of hairs that a person has on
their head. The more hairs a person has, the higher that person’s
hair density.
Hair structure
Hair structure refers to the thickness of the strands of hair. A
person’s hair can be:
• fine
• medium
• coarse
General hair care tips
● Shampoo
● Condition
● Dry
● Brush
If possible, they should try to limit:
Weaves and hair extensions: If possible, wear weaves and
extensions that are lightweight. Wearing hair that is tightly pulled
back can lead to hair loss, or traction alopecia.
Chemically treating the hair: People should try to leave some
between color touch ups. In addition, they should try to have one
treatment at a time. This is because very treated hair is more prone
to breakage.
Drying the hair using a towel: This can pull or twist the hair,
causing it to snap. It can also ruffle the hair cuticles.
Care instructions for straight hair
• any hair product that is labeled for dry hair
• oils, such as olive, coconut, and jojoba oil
• oil-based styling products
• leave-on products
According to a 2015 article Trusted Source, a person with straight
hair may need to use a gentler approach to caring for their hair.
This may involve:
• using gentle shampoos
• gently drying the hair with a towel
• brushing or combing the hair gently
Care instructions for curly hair
Over-brushing can damage curl definition. Therefore, people with
curly hair may need to experiment to find the right amount of
brushing for their hair.
Some other care tips for curly hair include:

• reducing shampoo usage

• air drying or using a diffuser on a blow-dryer
• avoiding dense combs and brushes
• avoiding heat styling tools
Tight hairstyles can also lead to traction alopecia, which results in
hair loss. People may wish to consider giving the hair a break after
2–3 months of wearing a weave or extension.

Safe procedure in removing objects
Foreign object(eyes)
The eye often cleans itself of debris with tearing, so no treatment is needed until you are certain
the eye cannot remove the object by itself.
First aid care for foreign objects in the eyes includes:
● Don’t rub your eyes.
● Lift the upper eyelid up and out over the lower lid, and then roll your eyes around.
● Flush your eyes generously with water, and keep your eyes open during flushing.
● Repeat the previous steps until the object is eliminated.
● Follow up with a doctor to make sure all debris is gone and the eyes have not been
scratched or damaged. Your doctor may evaluate you for damage by using a special eye
drop that fluoresces under a certain type of light; it will help reveal any cuts or scratches in
the cornea.
● If there is an object embedded in the eye, do NOT remove it, as this may cause
further damage. Instead, cover the eye with an eye shield or gauze and seek prompt
medical attention.
.
If a foreign object becomes lodged in your nose:
● Don't probe at the object with a cotton swab or other tool.
● Don't try to inhale the object by forcefully breathing in. Instead,
breathe through your mouth until the object is removed.
● Blow out of your nose gently to try to free the object, but don't blow
hard or repeatedly. If only one nostril is affected, close the opposite nostril by
applying gentle pressure and then blow out gently through the affected
nostril.
● Gently remove the object if it's visible and you can easily grasp it with
tweezers. Don't try to remove an object that isn't visible or easily grasped.
● Call for emergency medical assistance or go to your local emergency
room if these methods fail.
Here are some important steps to follow:( Ears)
Try to see if the object will fall out simply by tilting your child’s head.
● If you can see the object in the ear and think you can remove it easily, carefully
pull it out with a pair of tweezers. Be careful not to push it in deeper, and don’t
poke at the ear or try to remove the object by force. The ear canal is very
sensitive, and this could be painful.
● If it is a live insect, kill it before you try to remove it. Put a few drops of warm
(not hot) baby oil or vegetable oil in the ear. Have your child tilt and gently
shake their head to dislodge the bug. Don't use this method for anything other
than an insect, and don't use it if your child is in pain, the ear is bleeding, or if
they have tubes in their ear.
● If you’re sure the eardrum isn’t injured and your child doesn’t have tubes in their
ear, try washing the object out with a little warm water.
● You should see your doctor immediately if you can’t easily get the object out by
yourself, or if parts of it remain in the ear. You should also get medical help if
there’s pain, hearing loss, or discomfort after the object is removed.

Eye Care Tips
There are things you can do to help keep your eyes healthy and make sure you are
seeing your best:

Eat a healthy, balanced diet. Your diet should include plenty or fruits and
vegetables, especially deep yellow and green leafy vegetables. Eating fish high in
omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, tuna, and halibut can also help your eyes.
Maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight or having obesity increases
your risk of developing diabetes. Having diabetes puts you at higher risk of getting
diabetic retinopathy or glaucoma.
Get regular exercise. Exercise may help to prevent or control diabetes, high
blood pressure, and high cholesterol. These diseases can lead to some eye or vision
problems. So if you exercise regularly, you can lower your risk of getting these eye
and vision problems.
Wear sunglasses. Sun exposure can damage your eyes and raise your risk of
cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Protect your eyes by using
sunglasses that block out 99 to 100% of both UV-A and UV-B radiation.
Wear protective eye wear. To prevent eye injuries, you need eye protection
when playing certain sports, working in jobs such as factory work and
construction, and doing repairs or projects in your home.
Avoid smoking. Smoking increases the risk of developing age-related
eye diseases such as macular degeneration and cataracts and can damage the
optic nerve.
Know your family medical history. Some eye diseases are inherited, so it
is important to find out whether anyone in your family has had them. This can
help you determine if you are at higher risk of developing an eye disease.
Know your other risk factors. As you get older, you are at higher risk of
developing age-related eye diseases and conditions. It is important to know you
risk factors because you may be able to lower your risk by changing some
behaviors.
If you wear contacts, take steps to prevent eye infections. Wash your
hands well before you put in or take out your contact lenses. Also follow the
instructions on how to properly clean them, and replace them when needed.
Give your eyes a rest. If you spend a lot of time using a computer, you
can forget to blink your eyes and your eyes can get tired. To reduce eyestrain,
try the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look away about 20 feet in front of you
for 20 seconds.

Causes of tooth decay
Cavities are permanently damaged areas in the hard surface of
your teeth that develop into tiny openings or holes. Cavities,
also called tooth decay or caries, are caused by a combination of
factors, including bacteria in your mouth, frequent snacking,
sipping sugary drinks and not cleaning your teeth well.

What is the skin?
The skin is the body’s largest organ, made of
water, protein, fats and minerals. Your skin
protects your body from germs and regulates
body temperature. Nerves in the skin help you
feel sensations like hot ,heat and cold.
The skin has six main jobs to do on a day-to-day basis. These
include:
● Controlling body temperature:
The skin does a fantastic job of controlling body temperature and
keeping it stable. It does this in two ways: through sweating, and
changes in blood flow, depending on the temperature of the air
around us. If we are in a hot climate, our body releases sweat from
glands in the skin. The blood vessels that run through the skin also
get wider allowing increased blood flow, therefore releasing heat
from the body. This process reverses in cold climates. We sweat less
and the blood vessels get narrower, reducing the amount of blood
flow which helps the body retain heat. Magic!
● Storing blood
● Protection
● Sensation
● Absorption and excretion
● Vitamin D production
The Three Layers of Skin and Their Functions
1. The Epidermis
The epidermis is the water-resistant outer layer of skin
and the body’s first line of defense against
environmental elements, ultraviolet radiation, bacteria,
and other germs. It’s made up of 4-5 sublayers of
closely packed cells. The epidermis is responsible for
the cell renewal cycle: dead skin cells slough off the
stratum corneum (the superficial sublayer of skin
visible to the eye) and are replaced with new, healthy
cells that generate within deeper sublayers of the
epidermis. The epidermis also includes your pores,
which allow oil and dirt to escape your body.
The epidermis contains several specialized cells,
including:

Keratinocyte cells that create and store keratin, the

protein that strengthens skin
Langerhans cells that help prevent infection and
protect the immune system
Melanocyte cells that produce melanin, the pigment
that determines skin color
Squamous cells and basal cells, which can mutate
and cause basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell
carcinoma
2. The Dermis
The dermis is the layer of skin under the epidermis. This
layer of skin contains connective tissues and houses your
body’s hair follicles, sweat and oil glands, and blood
vessels. The dermis also contain nerve endings that are
responsible for sending messages to the brain when you
burn your hand on a hot stove or feel an itch at the back
of your neck. Blood vessels located in the dermis help
supply your skin with fresh blood carrying the oxygen
and nutrients it needs to be healthy.

Within its connective tissues, the dermis produces two

important proteins:
Collagen and elastin, which are responsible for the
shape, structure, firmness, and elasticity of your skin.
3. The Hypodermis
The hypodermis is made of subcutaneous (under the skin) fats,
connective tissues, blood vessels, and nerve cells. It’s the layer
of skin where fat is deposited and stored. The blood vessels in
the hypodermis are bigger and connect to the rest of your body.
Stored fat helps regulate body tissue and cushion your body’s
internal organs against bumps, hard impact, and falls.
The tissue in the hypodermis produces one important cell:
Adipocytes that store fat used for energy, cushioning, and
insulation.
